darkblade: (Molly vs Punisher)
[personal profile] darkblade posting in [community profile] scans_daily
Well last time I promised we’d get a look at the Young Avengers/Runaways Civil War mini and so shall I deliver but first let us see how the Runaways had an effect on Tony’s formation of the act itself.

Also there was one other mention of the two teams this post concerns that I forgot about until I went to dig out the Illuminati one shot to scan. From the “Daily Bugle” pamphlet that basically was a series of ads for different Civil War tie-ins.

I’m trying to figure out whom that blonde kid is supposed to be dressed as but I really don’t know. I thought Chase for a while but the Runaways aren’t exactly high profile enough for a kid in New York to really care about him that much and he didn’t have the fistigons of goggles at the time this was printed.

So on with the main attraction. I’m not sure how this fits in with the Runaway’s main series. It either takes place during or after the Live Fast arc.

So we open with the Runaways...

...shopping for produce. You can just feel the POWERHOUSE EXCITEMENT!

Though I like the banter between the SHIELD agents, all too often they are just treated as basic storm troopers but this book gives them actual depth and personality. Well not much depth but some personality at least.

Naturally they end up fighting a supervillain and the SHIELD Agents apologize but call in the backup.

Photobucket

So naturally they do what they do best, they runaway. The SHIELD Agents pursue.

Victor is severely damaged. Before this I was proud that Runaways never resorted to destroying Victor to show how bad shit is. Like the Avengers used to do moderately often with Vision and the Justice League always has done with Red Tornado. Oh well.

Meanwhile the Young Avengers are on monitor duty and see footage of the Runaways being attacked. Vision gets some system feedback from seeing Victor being damaged.

Photobucket

What does Cap have to say about this?

Photobucket

Yeah no surprise there really. Cap after all was the one who helped them after they indirectly killed their parents only for them to runaway again and then later fought them when they helped clear Cloak’s name from the imposter that was obsessed with Dagger. So it makes a certain amount of sense that he wouldn’t trust them now but then again he also doesn’t like the Young Avengers hero-ing and he does trust the Punisher later on in this event so...yeah you get to pick your bullshit.

The Runaways are busy trying to help Victor but since none of them are super geniuses there is little they can do.

I have a mixed reaction to this page. I like the subtle effect of Xavin changing gender when (s)he is off panel to comfort Karolina but what does Chase think he is going to do? No really what does he think he can do for Victor? He was a dumb jock when he was still in school and yeah Chase’s reaction here does not make a lick of sense.

So on to something awesome. Molly runs outside and sees the Young Avengers have found them. Not being up to date on the roster she naturally assumes they are from Stark’s Avengers and proceeds to be awesome.

Oh also Vision approaches Victor and they both go into some sort of meltdown but I used my last two pages on Molly being awesome which is a much more worthy cause.

We open the second issue with Maria Hill talking to some deformed mad scientist who runs the Cube talking about sending a brainwashed Nor-Var after the Runaways. But who cares about that crap? More Runaway on Young Avenger action! Molly fell asleep after throwing around Speed a bit so the Young Avengers come into the Hostel carrying an unconscious Molly. Naturally this leads to fighting.

Disassembled? That’d have been funny two events ago Nico. Try to keep up darling.

This fight takes up a lot of space so just some highlights.

So anyways Patriot convinces Nico to stop the fighting.

It doesn’t go as planned. Frankly I hate the portrayal of her magic in this book. It gets worse later but even here it always was more that the staff did what she wanted she just needed to think of different words to get the effect. In this mini the staff is painfully literal and Nico has a lot worse memory about what spells she has used than in any other Runaways story.

Also Xavin is being a stupid and a dick there. He could totally make a bonfire and warm up everyone or go all flame on himself to completely remove the cold from himself but nooooo.
One final complaint about this panel. Why is Vision breathing?

Photobucket

I like Karolina and Billy’s exchange at the bottom. Xavin and Victor (who were both introduced the same year as the Young Avengers were created) have uncanny similarities to Hulkling and Vision II/Iron Lad. A shape changing alien that enters a homosexual relationship with a member of another species and someone who grows up to be a major supervillain and has powers they got from Ultron based technology.

Photobucket

Naturally the Runaways have a hard time trusting these kids who are in line with the “adults”. Despite being such a normally well written series that aspect of the Runaways always bothered me. Especially since Cloak and Dagger got a free pass and not even pre-OMD Spider-Man did. I mean what is with that?

Photobucket

Xavin takes issue with Hulkling’s reluctance to fulfill his prophesy.

Photobucket

Only to have his neck snapped by Marvel Boy.

I think this is a good place to leave off for now. Next time I’ll wrap up this mini and the time after that I will show the Young Avengers involvement in the rest of the event.
