Bill's ride to Valhalla

I was looking over the old Thor posts and I think that the battle and fall of Bill, Born of Bills wasn't properly documented.

Bill earned his place place among the Einherjar.

Bill has the joined the Asgardians when they move to Latveria in Balder's ill-advised(Loki) deal with Dr. Doom.

Bill waits for Kelda, shivering, on a Latverian street when he hears a voice,

"You are far from your home."

It's Balder the Brave and Bright.

Bill finds Balder later in a feasting hall. I love how he calls him "Mr. Balder"!

Bill feels he needs to help Mr. Balder.





Bill goes to investigate.



Bill travels to a castle and stumbles upon Loki's and Doom's evil deeds. Loki has been kidnapping Asgardians and allowing Doom to perform horrible experiments on them.

Loki discovers Bill's presence and sends his goon squad after him.

It is time for Bill to draw steel!

Bill was an Oklahoma boy who loved a goddess and had his funeral pyre lit by Lord Balder, himself. Sing his song!

Balder speaks well of Bill, Born of Bills.



Kelda had attacked Dr. Doom while searching for Loki. He rips her heart out but after Balder and Thor defeat Doom, they are able to revive her.



Just before the Siege of Asgard, Kelda makes a heart-breaking journey.



Bill walks among the Einherjar but he and Kelda will be reunited. Their OTPness burns too brightly.

Plus, Balder and Bill? Awesome! Balder should totally take Bill under his wing.

Gosh, Bill, born of Bills, is really rather an awesome character, isn't he!

And it's one of those cases where you can see what the goddess sees in him, so it doesn't come across as false.

Well his soul is in Asgard currently with the other dead warrior heroes that the Valkyrie pick up but considering only dead people can go the particular hall that he is in, well Kelda is literally on the outside looking in.

I'm confused. He was beloved of a goddess. He died in glorious battle. He saved the life of a god (who actually, by myth anyway, should not have been vulnerable to metal swords, but never mind that right now). He clearly believed in the gods (in some sense, if not the praying to them sense).

So, as the post title says... shouldn't he be in Valhalla? And shouldn't Kelda be able to visit him there?

He is in Valhalla. (demanding mayo for his steaks!) but Kelda can't come because... Well, I don't know quite why.

Hmmm, the thing is, Kelda never struck me as a proper norse godess. (Balder here is actually pretty good though) she's too... Flowery.

In speech I mean, her actions are approporiate.

Eh, she seems definitely like a gentlewoman but of a warrior culture.  I love how when Bill says he is not good at swords, she says, "That will pass," rather than, "I don't care," or something similar.

Djurdjevic's art is tremendous. Looking back at the first time they met gives me shivers - it's one of my absolutely most favorite moments in comics. (and one I never would have found without S_D)

This! Maybe that's why she loves him so much: he's not so concerned with his own honor and legacy in history and memory as he's concerned about his love being left to her alone.

I've always been a DC girl, honestly, and never did get into most of the goings-on at Marvel, but this makes me regret it. There's such sweeping grandeur, real emotion and a tangible spirit of adventure here (as with Simonson's run way back), I want to read it all so bad.

But poor student without a regular job, alas. These scans did bring me to tears, though.

Thats kind of my pipe dream as the end result of the recent prince of power storyline. That Herc and Ares can just pull a Kratos and fight out of Hades so that Bill can take Cho's potion and become a god to live with Kelda. Its a dream but a nice one.

That Bill didn't blast out of Valhalla with a trail of Valkeries like a bat out of Hell was the biggest disappointment of Siege.

It is beautiful stuff...but it was kinda hard to take seriously at first. It was the backwards hat. I can never take that seriously.

JMS's Thor run was the first time I was ever truly interested in the character and Bill and Kelda were the best things about it. I wouldn't mind seeing a Bill, Born of Bills mini-series.

I so agree, his run was wonderful, but this....this made it epic. He took a normal man from a small town and with no powers, only courage and love, made him a hero. All Hail, Bill !!!

I so wish that Bill was kept alive. A spin-off series starring him, Kelda, and Balder would've been awesome. I like to call Bill the human that could. Seriously if you can live amongst gods, earn their respect, earn the love and spot of a bed of another, be able to take on some in combat and even kill one, and then earn a spot in Valhalla, seriously.. that makes you fucking awesome in my book. I wish I was Bill. Minus the dying part. lol

As fond of Bill as I am, I wonder if we didn't get what was best for the character with the death. A heroic finale is hard to come back from and not end up cheating the character.
