Interesting news from the 43rd Festival d’ Angoulême where the 30 strong list of nominees for their Angoulême Grand Prix has drawn a LOT of ire for managing to have not one single woman on it.
Of those thirty, a dozen have already asked to have their names withdrawn because of this omission:
Brian Michael Bendis
Christophe Blain
François Bourgeon
Charles Burns
Pierre Christin
Daniel Clowes
Etienne Davodeau
Milo Manara
Riad Sattouf
Joann Sfar
Bill Sienkiewicz
Chris Ware
The organiser are attempting to defend this stance
in an article in Le Monde which is not exactly tactful, to say the least. Asserting that the Grand Prix is awarded to artists “of a certain maturity and age”, he then adds, “Unfortunately there are few women in the history of comics. If you go to the Louvre, you will also find very few female artists.”
My head hurt at that last comment.
Brian Michael Bendis has countered this attitude on his blog when he withdrew with the comment that "the lack of female presence certainly does not reflect the reality I live or work in."
The organisers have attempted to balance things out by adding in a couple of previous female nominees (but not winners... only one woman has ever won the Grand Prix) but this is not mollifying anyone.
