"We want to twist horror tropes you’ve seen before in weird and interesting ways. We’re both huge horror fans (as an aside, best horror comics we’d recommend: anything by Junji Ito, Locke & Key by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, Ed Brubaker and Sean Philips’ Fatale and Through The Woods by Emily Carroll). We think a lot about what makes things scary and if we manage to freak each other out, we know we’re on the right track. It’s about feeling something for the characters. We’re playing with all the horror genres in one comic. Over the course of the series we’ll touch on body horror, slasher (although neither of us find torture porn particularly scary – so we’ve found other ways to ramp this up), J-horror, haunted houses, demonic video games, possession, sex, insects, evil twins, scary dolls. Our guiding principle is that we want to pull the rug out from under your feet – and when you look down you realize the rug is made from human hair and skin… and those aren’t your feet." -- Lauren Beukes and Dale Halvorsen

The other aspect I’ll front load here is while this is one of the most famously re-told evenings in literary history (it’s almost JFK-assassination level in terms of over-done-ness) that the stories always seem to lean on Byron and Percy Shelley. That seems fucking bizarre. It’s literally Mary Shelley’s story. Only one person made herself immortal that night, and did so in a way which seems more and more important as time goes by. The more research I did, the less interested I was in with Byron and Percy and the more I was with Mary and Claire [Clairemont]. As far as I was concerned, everyone else is a bit player. -- Kieron Gillen

A post I'd hoped not to have to make for many, many more years. The world of comics is mourning the loss of Carlos Ezquerra, at the terribly young age of 70, from lung cancer.

The aim of these monthly posts is to give community members a chance to request postings; A story they might recall but not know the name of, or a specific arc, or even examples from a particular creator or genre.

We can't, of course, guarantee that any request will be filled, but given the combined geekitude of the community (and we mean that in the nicest possible sense) you might be surprised what can be unearthed.

Also, since we're now into October, we're looking for ideas for a Halloween theme week.

Now, we normally get some of the traditional, and ever-welcome, old public domain stories from "Vault of Horror", and the disturbing stories of Junji Ito, shared, but is there a theme we can explore here?

Stories of heroes dealing with the horror genre which may be outside their normal purview?

Classic monster stories or classic horror stories? (Not always the same thing)

Or do we go a little meta, and honour the departed creators of the year gone by, whether they did horror or not?

Opinions and other ideas would be welcomed, just put your ideas in the replies to this post.
