At least 13 writers have rewritten her origin over the years. Her dad has 13 origin stories; sometimes he's evil, sometimes he's a robot, sometimes alive, sometimes he's dead. She's changed dramatically in the last 10 years, between coming back to life to the New 52 to Rebirth. She's gone through so much that it's hard to get a hold of her. Not to mention in the '90s, when I was coming up, she was like an ectoplasmic space angel. There's so much there, and I just wanted to take all that stuff off and get to the core of the character; get her out of her normal environments and her normal conflicts. It seems like all our stories are about her dad or her relationship to Superman. Instead, let's see the purity of that character. -- Tom King

"I actually came up with Black Hammer and started working on it (designing characters, etc.) back in 2008. I had just finished Essex County and this was really me taking my love of superheroes and channeling it through the rural setting and aesthetic of Essex.

The first comic book I ever remember reading was a DC digest that reprinted some Justice Society stories from the 1970s by Paul Levitz and Joe Staton. My mom bought it for me at the grocery store. I was probably five or so. And it never stopped.

DC’s Who’s Who also had a huge impact on me. It introduced me to the massive library of DC characters and also a wide variety of artists. That and Crisis on Infinite Earths both came out in 1985 when I was nine. They are probably the two biggest influences on my life and on Black Hammer."

Its premise is the same as its original - inventor Curtis Metcalf, wronged by his employer Edwin Alva, seeks revenge with a technological arsenal of his own development.

Issue #1's an engaging read, in part because of its balance between action and dialogue.

There's Curtis, as he's fending off the Dakota police - and then there's Edwin Alva, talking to the Dakota police.

The former is action, and the latter dialogue. )
