Forever War: GI Joe 44

After last issue being almost too dense to summarize, Issue 44 is a bit of a filler that largely only accomplishes introducing four new Joes and Dr. Mindbender. It's not poorly written, but I just feel antsy to get back to the story arc. Still, this tension between "Freak of the Week" stories and "myth arc" stories is nothing new and is probably always going to be a bit awkward (since it's not like eight episode "all myth arc, all the time" TV seasons have wiped out poor storytelling). So let's try to enjoy ourselves. Hey, Dr. Mindbender, right?

In Robert Louis Stevenson’s “ Treasure Island” the child protagonist shoots a pirate in the face with flintlock pistol among other non PC actions. Times have changed! I remember as a kid, seeing illustrations in Bible stories for children of young David chopping off the fallen Goliath’s head. There was a particularly gruesome drawing or engraving of Absalom and the tree that gave me nightmares. It’s too easy to forget that the purpose of showing these dark events is to demonstrate that it is possible to triumph over them.
