The Kingpin, as reimagined by Frank Miller, was one of comics' best villains in the early 1980s. Though he could throw hands with superheroes when he had to, his real power was rooted in wealth, intimidation, and gaming the system. His nickname said "criminal," but his team of high-priced lawyers said "legitimate businessman." Baked into this concept is a noir sensibility, an acknowledgment that life isn't fair. Justice might be worth fighting for, but it won't always arrive.

Other comics villains would follow this archetype, most notably Lex Luthor when he was reinvented in 1986. Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew #12 got there three years sooner.
( Bill Sienkiewicz helped them do it. )

A few weeks ago, Red and I were returning from a trip to the Midwest, and as per tradition we stopped at the Florida Welcome Center just past the Georgia/Florida border (bathrooms! free orange juice!). As I was taking my complimentary cup of juice, I noticed this promotional comic sitting nearby, and took one on a whim. Red took one look at it and started laughing: “You have GOT to share this!”
So, without further adieu…

( A legend is born... )
12 pages, not counting ads and the obligatory "Go to captaincitrus.com and explore for more super-powered fun!" I am curious, though, that the cover indicates that this was "Custom Edition 2". Have to wonder what #1 was...?
