Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, in cosplay, courtesy of AintItCoolNews.

Ahem. More DC Fail.

Hard-light constructs. Simple geometry, effective and efficient in purpose.
Not... "ribbed... for his/her pleasure."

This was good, too. Part Green Lantern, part Parallax.

Sigh.

For legality, Ryan is going to have to be able to pull off scenes like this without people snickering.

I'll just crosspost what I said on my blog:

Gahh... where do I begin? The mask is painted on, and has very weird lines (especially the upper edge). The costume looks like one of those photomanipulations of nude models as superheroes, except the striations make it look like his skin is missing. And the chest logo looks like an afterthought. It might look better in motion, though.

Considering the costume was added in digitally, with Reynolds wearing a motioncapture suit most of the time while on set, yeah, I would look like it's a photomanip of a nude model.

Wow, that mask looks INCREDIBLY dopey in real life.

That said, a lot of costumes look really stupid in promotional photos and just fine in the film itself, so I will reserve my judgment.

It looks cheap. I mean come on... how much are they using to make this movie they couldn't have at least spent a little more on the costume budget?

Oh well. Hopefully it's just one of those things that looks better on screen.

The costume's done with CGI, so yeah, not sure of their costume budget.

Presumably to emulate an alien material as producing something like on the magazine cover (skintight with illuminated contours) would be too hard to do with actual costumes without looking like something from the Schumacher Batman era.

Sure. Don't see how that requires CGI though. Wonder Woman of what, 20-30 years ago had a costume change. Heck, couldn't they match the Power Rangers in costume switching tech? That guy is unemployed, isn't he?

Well, if all the ring constructs are CGI, it makes sense the costume, a ring construct, will be CGI as well.

Of course, the costume and the mask are created by the ring without Hal having to "ask" or "will" it. IIRC Johns' Secret Origin story, the ring creates the costume, and the ring later puts up the mask to protect Hal's identity.

I'm sure there's a reason the Guardians decided "the Green Lanterns will keep their identities hidden from the people of their home world." Probably something Sinestro did. Bastard.

TDK was a good action movie. It wasn't a good Batman movie. I don't have enough spoons right now to get into a debate about the pros and cons. The comics --> live action transfer doesn't work for me. It does for you. We disagree, so let's agree to and leave it there.

Watch SUPERMAN II: THE DIRECTOR'S CUT. If you just ignore the last five minutes, which utterly fucking waste everything, it's a damn near perfect classic Superman story.

I think the costume could be ok but the mask looks awful here.

This was supposedly in 3D right? Cus I think if ever there was a movie that's suited for 3D it's Green Lantern.

The slim part is definitely problematic. She's kinda too tall too. The Wall nickname loses some dimension by having Basset.
However I think she can be fierce and hardass without coming of as smug (which is my main problem with Pam Grier in Smallville), so I try to be optimistic. They could have gone for CCH Pounder but maybe she wasn't A-List enough or something.

I was once at a comic convention where Dave Gibbons commented that he'd not bee sold on the GL costume in comics until he's seen cosplayers wear them for real, and that done properly it really is rather impressive, and as if it might have a semi-military uniform look to it. Not sure the "extra ribbed for your pleasure" look is doing much for me,

Eh, he was my very favorite superhero, and to some extent still is, but ever since they brought him back, I've wondered if he ever was the character I thought he was, or if all the kneejerk Hal-haters were right all along.

Then I read this list, and I am filled with such affection for the guy:

http://io9.com/5579211/14-demented-green-lantern-stories-that-were-sure-wont-be-in-the-movie

Thing is, I don't know who else would look at that stuff and go, "Oh, Hal, you big schmuck, I love ya," rather than "Ugh, this is why he sucks!" At his best, he's the Captain Kirk of DC Comics, but more prone to delightfully oblivious fail. I wish Johns et al wouldn't take him so seriously.

FWIW, I actually got my girlfriend in GL in a big way with EMERALD DAWN, EMERALD DAWN II, and GL: THE ROAD BACK. Maybe it helps that she's an old-school STAR TREK fan, but she utterly fell in love with the entire GL mythos, Hal and Guy especially, and we both lament that Johns' Hal isn't as good as Gerard Jones'. I feel like that entire great run is ignored.

Rambling now. Sorry. Point is, if you're so inclined, give those a try.

Here's my hope. It's not the actual costume. It's a rookie outfit, one he'll wear in the beginning. He'll ditch the ribbed condom look for a more traditional looking outfit near the end.

I know it probably won't happen, but let me have hope.

I don't mind so much the ribbed stuff--it looks like they were trying to go for more of a never-ending like deal, and I'm sure in life action it could ebb and flow and do some interesting stuff. The fact that it's all green, though, makes it feel really tacky and silly, IMO.

There's a hi-res scan of the EW cover floating around the internet, and on it, you can see Reynolds' pores through the mask. :U That is a little too much for me, I think; and I don't much like the glowing stripes, besides. But I don't know, Hal Jordan is nowhere near my favourite Lantern and there is a chance I am just picking at nits to be contrary. We'll see when the trailers hit!

Wow that's high res

I kinda like how the lines converge on his arms so it sorta looks like regular gloves. It's sooo weird how the costume just stops on his neck. Which is sort of like the mask, it looks painted on...
I like the glowing lights/cracks. Reminds me of Tron. Andin this instance it's as if he's first got a shiny energy layer around him and on top of that hardened light construct.

Hoping for more shots/video of him in action to blow us away.

Ehhnn.

Is that the final? If that's him after absorbing Ion in the climax or something I could buy it, but not as a standard uniform.

And now I have this odd desire to make a GL costume based off an Air Force uniform.

The commentary for JUSTICE LEAGUE: NEW FRONTIER said that their version of Hal Jordan was something of a middle ground between Lee Marvin and Paul Newman. I wonder if that's where Reynolds and Co. will go with the character.
