Good analogy.

I really do not understand wonderseal's attitude. The community puts forth resources about being anti-oppression, but they don't want to read that, and then somehow it's their right to be ignorant when the material is actually being pushed forth. I am fine with patiently conversing with people in my everyday life when they screw up, because they really could have gone through life utterly ignorant and ignorant of their ignorance. But when attempts to dispel ignorance in this community gets responses of "I don't want to see this in a comics comm"? No, I will not be patient with your ass.

People's willful ignorance do not deserve my respectful, open-to-discussion patience. You get my "oh my god shut up shut up shut up".

What bothers me about the, Not In A Comics Comm attitude is that it requires we not discuss these issues honestly. Someone reminded me recently that when we confront oppression and discrimination, it can't be by half measures and it's bound to get messy sometimes. Often the community will come to a consensus about material that's being posted. Other times an argument will break out and just trying to patch things over solves nothing. The rift is still there, waiting to open up again. All that does is bury the hurt under a gloss of Superdictionary and bondage!Robin. I don't want us just pretending to get along.

I find the Not In A Comics Comm a very dangerous line of thought. Anti-oppression education should only occur in dedicated anti-oppression spaces? That's ridiculous.

Anti-oppression work should take place wherever oppression occurs.

It would be nice if that could go without saying.

I think there's a place for Superdictionary and Bondage!Robin, obviously, too.

I just think that a commitment to equality means that you're gonna have more discussions than you expect about the consequences of actions, and that most of those discussions are not /actually/ much more heated than those one has that are ostensibly all about comics.
