Title: Ensign Sue Must Die
Creators: Clare Moseley and Kevin Bolk
Availability: Available Online

Some people saw fit to remind the internet that the term "Mary Sue" originated in the Trek fandom.

I...I may have to buy the book.

So it was a parody? Though I've never read it, I thought that it was actually a straightforward fanfiction that exemplified the concept.

Apparently, I haven't read it either. Though obviously fans even back then recognized Mary Sues on sight, and this Meta character was the first to really point this out.

The parody was written in response to a specific story (title escapes me, sorry) that was, apparently, the last straw for Ms. Smith. I read that story once; it was about a 20th century girl who gets transported to the future, and Spock falls deeply in love with her because she's so amazingly awesome, but she's tormented and angsty about their love, but then they totally do it.
