Title: Ensign Sue Must Die
Creators: Clare Moseley and Kevin Bolk
Availability: Available Online

Some people saw fit to remind the internet that the term "Mary Sue" originated in the Trek fandom.

I...I may have to buy the book.

On the bright side, at least she has no knowledge that the universe she's inhabiting is actually a divergent timeline... OR DOES SHE?

I love how she clashes with everyone and thing around her.

Also "and then the worms died" is awesome.

I looked at her first panel and thought "Her eyes are shut. I reckon they're either green or violet. Possibly both."

...

I obviously need some better reading material in my life.

I am asking this as a serious question and not to be snide, can anyone name some Mary Sue characters in actual comics and why they think so?

Since the term Mary Sue is a loaded term, that's kind of a leading statement.

Unless you're talking of parody mary/gary su/stus like John Freeman (who was Gordon Freeman's Brother) and that chick Enoby/Ebony from that "goff" version of Harry Potter where everyone is vampires.

Otherwise you're going to get people including Sherlock Holmes, Superman, Batman, Robin, Harry Potter, Jesus, James Bond, Dracula etc etc. as Mary Sus, just because they don't like them much.

Post-OMD Spider-Man. The new/old status que reeks of too much author (well editor) identification.

Nurse Annie is pretty much a textbook case of Relationship Sue. Based on the writer's significant other (which he wasn't shy about admitting), dropped in to be the perfect mate for the author's favorite character, and warped the characterization of all around her so that everyone either adored her or was a wicked harpy.

Damien. Little bugger is near perfect at everything that a Robin would need to be. He gets to do whatever he wants even when it is annoying things, and he enver gets punished for it. He is totally a vehicle for how Grant thinks Robin should be.

Sally Floyd? Retconned in relationships with established characters, supposed depth and insight, which established characters are constantly conceding too, her apparently being loved by all, despite being a deeply unpleasant individual. Yeah, pretty much textbook canon Sue by my standards.

So where exactly is the original fandom that created the term Mary Sue?

From Wikipedia:

The term "Mary Sue" is taken from a character created by Paula Smith in 1973 for her parody story "A Trekkie's Tale," published in her fanzine Menagerie #2. The character in question was Lieutenant Mary Sue ("the youngest Lieutenant in the fleet — only fifteen and a half years old"). Smith's story poked fun at unrealistic and adolescent wish-fantasy characters in Star Trek fan fiction. Such characters were generally original (non-canon) and female adolescents who had romantic liaisons with established canon adult characters or in some cases were the younger relatives or protégés of those characters. They also possessed unrealistic, often exotic skills beyond those that would have been expected of a character in that series or of a conventional author surrogate. "Mary Sue" was expanded to include any author surrogate or overly idealized character who plays a big role in original fiction as well as fan fiction.

I...is it wrong that I find Mary Sue stupidly endearing here. The melodrama in the face of everyone else's exasperation, the uniform biting of joy, "and then the worms died." LOL XD

Nah. I actually find real Sues kinda endearing too. I mean, they're written by people (mostly nerdy teenage girls) who are pouring out their fantasies of being special and important and having the characters that they love so much love them back the same way. It's not good literature, but I can't hate them for daydreaming about being the greatest cleric on Krynn and marrying Palin Majere and having boy/girl fraternal twins.

Um, not... that... I would know anything about that, personally. *shiftyeyes*

Kitty Pryde doesn't count, but do Claremont's many Kitty iterations in other work count? Given this post I am specifically thinking of his Kitty surrogate in his Trek OGN with Adam Hughes, Debt of Honor. A fun romp through an Aliens rip-off co-starring the little girl from the TOS episode "Court-Martial," Jaime Finney, all grown up, plucky, and wearing space body armor as she kicks alien ass.
