I don't have a problem with a Mary Sue as long as it's written really well.

Isn't that a contradiction, though?

Why would it be? Mary Sue only defines the character, not the material.

But a well-written character isn't a Sue/Stu. For example, a female protagonist can be beautiful, competent, well-regarded, and get the guy/gal of her dreams without being a Sue -- it all depends on what the author does to make the reader feel that she's earned her rewards and good-will through the journey. A Sue in that same position, however, rarely gets more justification than "because she's just that special!"
