I know that it can be tough to nail down the edges of the Mary Sue concept, and it's always tempting to just apply it as a label to whatever character you think is getting a free narrative ride.

That's why I always go back to Potter Sues, to re-center myself regarding just what a real Mary Sue looks like in the wild. Keeps me out of certain arguments, and provides hours of schadenfreudian entertainment and gape-mouthed horror.
