One Perfect Moment: Peter/MJ pt.2

I know we've been getting a lot of these recently, but I swear this is my last one!


In Sensational Spider-man Annual #1, Peter had the bright idea of taking off his mask and revealing his secret identity to everyone. This of course caused MASSIVE problems for him, and he and MJ are constantly hiding(his Aunt May shot, now in a coma in a hospital). Most of the issue deals with MJ talking with her former bodyguard turned SHIELD agent, and Peter talking to Detective Lamont from JMS' ASM run(bring him back, Marvel!). There's some really great moments throughout the entire annual, but there's a scene that happens at the beginning and the ending of the book that I really wanted to share.

When I was reading this after it came out, I could tell it was a last hurrah for the marriage.

Yeah, by then the Quesada Hype Machine was already hinting at One More Day. It was a really good issue but also an incredibly bittersweet one. :(

Lamont fans unite! People complained that on JMS run, all of Peter's supporting cast went out the window(Jonah is only in one issue, Robbie in two, etc). But the cast that IS there, is really good. Aunt May becomes an actual character, Peter/MJ have never been better, and then there's fun additions like Ezekiel and Lamont. I understand why Ezekiel's gone, but bring Lamont back, damnit!

Oh, and I'm sure Spidey web-swung out of that last panel.

Yeah, this is so much better than a divorce. Instead of realistically showing their relationship deteriorate, just have them swear undying love and actually strengthen their relationship for YEARS on end before arbitrarily revealing that it was all bullshit and MJ really didn't mean anything to Peter, in fact, that he's better off without her. That's how you end a fan favorite pairing.

I really wish Matt Fraction was writing Amazing instead of the Brain-Trust/Slott. To be honest, I kinda wish Fraction was writing most of the Marvel Universe at this point.

Can that happen? Fraction apparently believes in adult normative monogamy or something, whereas the Power That Be appears to hate married characters.

While I too dislike the supporting cast thing, in fairness it was apparently (yet another!) editorial thing. He handled a larger cast fine in the New Avengers arcs, but once you have an entire superhero team plus MJ and May, there's not really much room for other characters.

Spidey has had a lot of police officers he's particularly friendly with over the years, but they tend to disappear as soon as the next creative team shows up - the only ones that have stuck in collective memory are George Stacy and Jean DeWolff. The current "police character" in BND is a Japanese descent female police captain whose name is completely blanking on me right now. She seems cool enough but like Lamont she's just not getting the development that'll let her stick around.

A lovely moment indeed. :) Through all the scans that I've seen of Peter and MJ together, I'm beginning to see how much she means to him.

I like most of the art on these particular scans too, particularly the soft, pretty (pastel?) late evening colours.

Or just reboot. A simple "ok, we want to go back to writing Spidey single so now he's single again."

It would have been a direct editorial decision without forcing the characterization into tortured pretzels, with the same result, and more people might get on with the new stories simply because the characters hadn't been morphed into horrible idiots in order to make them fit the story.

When you put plot in front of characterization, don't be surprised when most people view the results with disdain, boredom or downright hatred.

Or, since they want a Spider-Man who's twenty-ish, single, and lives with his parents -- which is everything Peter Parker isn't -- just introduce a legacy character. I know they already tried that with Ben Reilly, but there they shot themselves in the foot by saying that Peter Parker was a clone. Just use all that Spider-Totem stuff and say that Ananzi is picking a new avatar, make Peter into a mentor character, and go from there.

Well, basically, Spidey does his whole webslinging thing by jumping off buildings and shooting his web-shooters, so I guess this is the moment where they've just jumped off the building, right before he shoots. (That, or I heard something about him briefly gaining gliding abilities...)

So, wait - why is MJ in trouble? I get that a lot of people are after Peter at this point, but what has MJ done?
Also, that is an awesome look of 'oh, WOW' on her face on the first page.

I'm... Mixed in my Fraction appreciation. I think he fubbed Iron-man pretty badly. (But some of his other stuff has been good) But then again, that might just be because he came right after the Knaufs.
