It's possible to be an unpredictable seasoned player, but being an unpredictable rookie will not. You still need to know what you're doing even if you play unconventionally.

This I thinks works because Joker is a master as well, just with a different style.

Yeah, put me in the "doesn't buy this game" camp. The point of the Joker is that people are always trying to play chess with him, and he's always playing Calvinball. His great genius is that his mind is completely unconstrained by ANY rules, and he's always coming up with some crazy-ass shit no sane person could have even imagined.

Joker-chess would be where any piece can move anywhere at any time, and an unknown percentage of pieces are equipped with concealed guns and explosives. And even that's limiting it.

Yeah, but as they say, 'you have to know the rules before you can break them'. Joker may specialize in playing his own game, but that doesn't mean he can't play other games in his own unique fashion.

This is an interesting scene, because Ras does not normally socialize with the Gotham crowd. If we didn't already know that Joker was the big boogeyman of them all, this would prove it - he may technically be just an insane clown, but an immortal world conqueror respects him enough to associate with him.
