I can't seem to get into Superman ever since I realised that he comes from a race that managed to get itself killed because they ignored overwelming evidence that the planet was about to explode. This is in spite of the fact that they were a highly advanced science based society that was fully capable of evacuating said planet.
No matter how many times the event is retold Krypton is either destroyed by willfull stupidity or aparent suicide.
No exactly like that unfortunately. The problem is that Kryptonians are always said to be better than humans mentally. They are usually an example of what humanity should strive for instead of a cautionary tale.
It was canon for awhile that there was a bio-medical reason Kryptonians abandoned space flight, that they died if they left their planet. It was set up in the John Byrne reboot, dunno if it's still canon.
I think current canon is the DCAU version: Braniac discredited Jor-El out of self-preservation, so he (and Kal-El) survive while Krypton went boom. I think they threw in the "self-imposed exile" thing to explain why there were no colonies other than Argo.
The Wayne family get involved. Kal-El grows up to be Superman AND Clark Kent, just like in the usual universe. And any Kryptonians other than Superman turn out to be snobby dicks.
Judging by these scans, this Elseworld isn't predictable or unchallenging at all...
I kind of like the twins. The sister doesn't seem to be a snobby dick.
But the series is moving too fast for real character development of new characters or old ones. I mean, Lois only gets a few panels before she and Clark are in bed together. Probably the first version I've seen without a big reveal. I don't know why, but to me, Lois finding out that Clark is Superman just never gets old.
I don't know why, but to me, Lois finding out that Clark is Superman just never gets old.
One of the best/funniest was probably in "The Adventures of Lois & Clark." A time traveler taunters Lois that people in the future think of her as one of the dumbest people ever for not realizing Clark was Superman. She's all "I totally knew the whole time" but it's obvious she didn't.
The message of EVERY Supes Elseworlds: Superman will out.
Seriously; almost all of them end up that way. In the end, except for RED SON, it always turns out There Must Be A Superman. They're always stories of how a divergent reality goes back to the status quo.
Then there was that Batman story with the Phantom Stranger, where he and Robin save another world's Bruce Wayne from being orphaned, and it implies he'd eventually become Batman anyway just for different reasons.
This goes back to the origins of the Elseworlds, a line that began with BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT. They were always less about alternate realities and more about premises such as "Batman... in Victorian times!" Seeing the heroes in a different setting, basically, and they've stuck to those roots over the years.
Or to put it another way, Elseworlds are titled SUPERMAN: SOMETHING-SOMETHING, not KAL-EL: SOMETHING-SOMETHING for a reason.
Granted, but they've become very predictable for that reason. Has there ever been one where he did NOT choose to be Superman? A selfish Kal who just wants a normal life and sticks to it might be interesting. Imagine if he'd decided to keep his powers secret forever.
Is Lara also going to save Steve Trevor, so Diana doesn't have to leave the island? Save Abin Sur from mortal injury? Save Barry Allen from the lightning strike? XD
Lots of family infighting, and Kal calls him Jor-El instead of Dad or Father. So much for "They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way."
Well I guess one person killed Batman before he was even born, and that person was Superman's mom. That said I kind of love how Bruce is all happy with Lara, he even visits her a bit before they find out about the Doomsdayers and Valora.
