Sam is a 6 ft tall dog with a fondness for blue suits, fedoras, and fudgesicles. Max is a semi rabid lagomorph. Together, they solve crimes in as over the top fashion as they can manage. This time though, they're not stopping crime, but playing a little game called fizzball!

Batter Up!

So this past Labor Day weekend was that comic book nirvana in Atlanta Dragon*Con. As a costumer, I'm lucky enough to both know some great people and have been involved in some awesome shoots. It was entirely due to s_d that I became a fan of the Justice League International and of Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, the Elongated Man, and the Martian Manhunter. To return the gift of those great characters and stories, I offer this...

The Martian Manhunter eating Oreos.

Hokey smokes! I LOVE Sam and Max! This place needs more of the classy adventures of Sam the dog and Max the rabbity-thing. Especially the full-colour painted comics Purcell made in later on. they are GORGEOUS.

And of all the days to post it, I just purchased the first three seasons of the new game series. So thanks for the nostalgia trip, Pyynk!

Also, fizzball IS dangerous and hilariously fun. I should know: I played it annually for a few years with my roomies.

No milk? No wonder he seems a bit upset.

I read my friend's collections of these years ago and loved them (and played his copy of the original game). I totally need more Sam & Max in my life.

Also, folksinging!

Thank you for posting this! I'm obsessed with Sam and Max. I even got a Steve Purcell signed copy of the animated series for my birthday this year as a surprise. Awesome. I wanted to post some of my first scans for the Favorite Friendship or Favorite Artist day from this, but I didn't think I could do S&M (cough) justice.

Anyways, since it's related, here's a teensy bit from Steve Purcell from the forward of Surfin' the Highway:

"In the twenty plus years since the first Sam and Max comics was published, I have often heard from people who tell me some version of, 'My friends and I always use that phrase,' or 'We make up our own Sam and Maxisms,' or even more memorably, 'We played Fizzball at our wedding with an engraved axe handle!' It's a gratifying thing to have people introduce your characters into their lives that way."

That is a really good J'onn! A friend on mine was at the con and she posted a few JLI group shots. I was pretty sure I recognized the Booster!

Man, I remember playing Fizzball at Burning Man '99. Good times.

I used to do something similar to Fizzball years ago when I went on walks with my parents a lot. There was a local orchard that we used to walk in a fair amount, and during apple season, I'd carry around this sort of mallet-shaped hunk of wood that I'd picked up somewhere. When a nice semi-rotten apple was found, I'd have one of them throw it at me, and I'd swing the mallet at it, and SPLAT! Great big giant apple explosion! It was great. Ah, the joys of country living.
