Day 24: Most Hated Costume.

What costume do I hate the most?






Oh God, where do I begin? Granted, as  I villian I could accept this much skin, as Carol, in attemp to to impress Hal, would think exposing her body would make herself more aluring, in other words: The sultrier, the better in her mind. But then she KEPT it after becoming a Star Saphire of her own free-will, to protect love. But what part of being a guardian of  "love" says you need to expose your entire front of your body, just barely covering your rack and beaver!!?!?!? They look like space-sults.



And also, collars like those DO NOT work on a spandex suit! AT ALL! it looks just plan stupid. I can only hope that the suit will somehow be retcon back to be an homage the original Star Sapphire Outfit.



Or if not, something modest, something that encourage you to love the woman of both body and mind, rather than JUST the body. I see Sailor Moon more of a guardian of love than the Star Spahires. Heck the Sapphires from the end of the Sinestro Corps. War seem more tasteful. What happen to them!

I think the Star Sapphires costumes are symptomatic of their high number of other problems.

I would dearly love to read that rant. Because everything from their costumes to the apparent brand of "love" the Star Sapphires represent has always seemed problematic to me, though I haven't followed the comics closely for the past few months. Would love to see someone address some of this stuff.

Why do all female aliens have mammary glands? Are there no non-mammalian aliens? Why would aliens follow Earth-species physiology anyway? For that matter why assume that the two gender male and female structure is universal in the cosmos? Even on earth there are creatures that reproduce asexually and I believe there are some species of insect that have more than two genders.

It's like the writers and artists are afraid to step outside the comforting bubble of anthropomorphism. We are like this therefore all species everywhere in the universe are like this!

Science Fiction Fail!

Also there is already a classic Star Sapphire costume-the silver age Kane design. Why not continue to use that? Why must creators always seek to break that which was not broken?

I think without the bizarre push-up tits, it could be made to work. It' looked best with Acuna. But then, there's always been a bit of sexism to her outfit. It was pink, always, on the simplest level(it was only recently decided that was violet), but there was also the "space stewardess" vibe to the original, which you could consider an artifact of its time and even attribute to Carol's aviation background, but she RAN the company.

Stripperificness aside, it's just not a well-designed costume. The meandering edges along the ultra-plunging neckline, the distracting pointless collar, the placement of the star, the holes around the star... it just looks so cluttered and unbalanced.
