Oh, I don't know about that. True, there have always been talented writers in the field who want to make their mark, but comics have only really been taken SERIOUSLY - in the US, I mean - during the last few decades. Before then, there was the lingering prejudice that comics were cheap and disposable, junk entertainment - and while we both know this isn't the case, it did lead to a lot more self-deprecation amongst those who worked in the field. Such things make it much easier to loosen up and have a little fun. It wasn't until the early '80's or so that comics started to make waves - this was the era of 'Watchmen', 'V for Vendetta', 'Dark Knight Returns'. It took a while for all this to really kick in, but when it did, it did, and all of a sudden, 'comic book writer' was a perfectly respectable job. Suddenly, these guys could potentially create TRUE ART. This led to a lot of swelled egos, and things kind of snowballed from there. I'm not saying that there aren't still plenty of writers who view what they do with a healthy dose of self-deprecation, mind you, but they can become genuine celebrities if they play their cards right - look at Neil Gaiman - and some people are just too obsessed with being BIG AND IMPORTANT to relax and goof around a bit.
