Today is the first day of the semi-finals to decide the most ass-kicking-est DC Woman. The first round created 16 Semi-finalists and 8 pairs will battle to get to the quarter finals. You can see who they all are here. You can vote in today's round here.

Today's match has one of Gothams' newest female capes vs. one of the most long standing female characters.

In this corner a woman who spends her days in Gotham playing her guitar and working with her dad on her equipment. At night, she patrols the streets taking down criminals and killers

Batwoman/Kate Kane.

And in the other corner, a woman who spends her days listening to Jazz and intervening in her roommate’s squabbles. At night, she jumps from rooftops as the world’s best cat burglar


Selina Kyle/Catwoman.

I have a feeling that I'm going to be the minority here, but my vote is for Kate.
Only cause she has been around for such a short amount of time and has been written
to be a competent level headed badass. She is a phenomenal character.
Not saying Selina is not, no no no. But Yeah, I just favor Kate more.

My vote goes to Kate too, for the same reason as yours. I love Selina, but Kate has sort of bowled me over in such a short period of time, it's remarkable.

I haven't caught up with Kate yet, since they haven't really started pushing her stuff into trades yet, but is she supposed to be an albino? That second panel, she looks like she's wearing V's Fawkes mask.

Either way - albinism or just an art style I don't care for - she just doesn't have enough history with me yet to overcome Selina, especially what's been done with her since the early 'aughts.

Her skin tone changes depending on who's drawing her. In 52 she had a light tan, when JH Williams started drawing her he deliberately wanted to evoke a sort-of pale skinned goth vampiric look, when she's appeared in other titles though (Batman and Robin, JLA:Cry for Justice) her skin isn't so pale.

I gotta say it... while Selina was running around in possibly her best, most practical costume ever, Batwoman was fighting crime in high heels and getting press releases about being a lipstick lesbian.

Yeah, but I feel like Selina has been badass for longer. She just pulls seniority. I get that Kate's been rehabilitated as a character, but Selina hasn't needed to be rehabilitated, so that's a tiebreaker.

I dunno... I love Selina, voted for her, but "hasn't needed to be rehabilitated" depends on how far back you go. Mid 90s, when her book existed primarily to see how many cheesecake shots could be crammed into 22 pages, or how big her boobs could get before they collapsed into a black hole that swallowed the whole DCU? She was something of a wreck before Brubaker got a hold of her and she got her current costume.

Yeah, but just about everyone got the short end of the stick in the 90s, so I really can't hold that against her. To me, Selina has had a long, almost uninterrupted stretch of quality storytelling, and even though Kate is also getting quality storytelling, her awesomeness doesn't stretch as far back.

Gonna go with Catwoman. I like what they've been doing with Batwoman, the character seems really cool, but Catwoman has been playing both sides of the mask and there has to be some respect for that.

Kate's such a fantastic character and she totally deserves this, but it's Selina. Selina Stealing the hearts of Batman and the masses is no easy feat. I really don't want to see Kate go, because she's incredible, but ... ::cries::

Catwoman is one of my top female comics characters ever: I like that she seems to be a loner, that she does her own thing to the point that maybe independence is her defining ideal/character trait, while at the same time she's not a cold or aloof character (which makes her contrast rather nicely with characters like Harley or Ivy, but also with "love interests" like Lois or Talia), that she's a "fun" character who deep down seems rather sad/disillusioned and yet has strong morals when it matters, that she doesn't always have to be "kickass female" (Catwoman, let's face it, is clever and a good enough martial artist to hold her own in a fight, but she's not an uber-fighter). She makes mistakes, she's not a paragon of virtue, but unlike many reformed villains or anti-heroes, Catwoman never seems to "revert" to her evil ways, because writers seem to accept that she truly is a good person. To sum it up, Selina is one of the few women (not girls, because Selina Kyle is most definitely a grown-up) in comics who I find relatable AND cool.

Me too! Let's face it, this segregating characters into heroes and villains doesn't really happen in real life. When I meet someone, I don't normally catalog them into as hero or villain. And Selina seems like a really smart pragmatic woman who can adapt any situation to her advantage. At the same time, she's not perfect, so really relatable.

Yeah I'm gonna go with Catwoman here, she had some rough times but across the last years she has been pulled back into a great character.

I believe they are from the last issue of the most recent run of Catwoman, hence the little note in the trash fluttering in the Batmobile's wake.

I love that moment, but I'm really not seeing Bruce being confounded by something as simple as batteries.

They have both been in relatively equal amounts of shit, and survived it even better.
They are two of the most bad-ass characters DC has, female or not.

But I vote for Kate, because she has always been written well, whereas Selina has often been written as nothing but a hot body.
