I would say "Oddly timed sexual innuendo" but I was forced to cut the part where our hero makes a comment about the heroine's breasts getting bigger in front of her parents...
Whom he's been adopted by.
But if you want the first two, then have I got the series for you! It's the second volume of Devilman!
Edit: Stupid cut, hiding damn near half the story beneath a second cut...
I think I have it fixed now...
It also does something the Manga never does--defining Devilman's powers. Throughout, we'll see him pull out new attacks and weapons outa nowhere--Fire Breath, Phasing through walls, Telepathic powers...all attributed to the demon's might/abilities. In addition to his "Devil Arrow" (Antennae Lightning), "Devil Beam" (Energy ray from hands) and so on. Sadly, the Devil Cutter never shows up in the Manga--I guess firing a series of razor blades from your belly button that range in size from 1 to 3ft across is a little too
But, to Volume II! With the introduction of the iconic villainess Selene. She's appeared in 3 of the 4 adaptations of this series, so that says something. The fact that she walks around basically nude certainly doesn't hurt her appeal.
We open with Miki and Akira heading to school when Miki notices the change in Akira.
And the fact that he's walking around with his shirt undone and not giving two shits about it. She asks if its really him.

Akira still gets flustered by her assertiveness, and that's awesome (though he adapts).
Anyway, the bullies from before show up to give them more shit and save face for last time. Asuka isn't around this time (as he's in the hospital), but Miki, being awesome, insults them heavily. Asking why haven't they just gone and killed themselves after being so thuroughly humiliated.
But then they reveal why they are so confident.

Miki is ready to fight! But she's outnumbered 3 to one with a handicap in Akira--who then offers to take them all on himself.
Much to her relief.
He uses only a single hand and manhandles the lot of them.

And this gets a mild "God Damnit, Japan" outa me.
Later, Akira has a horrific nightmare of demons frozen in ice--and one in particular frightens him greatly.

Miki wakes him up from the nightmare. He was literally yelling in his sleep.
And then mocks him for being scared of a dream.

Miki's just a LITTLE forward...

And then she slaps him! Ah, young love.
She's a Tsundere to be sure, but he becomes something of a Jerk because of the fusion. I'll explain why in a bit.
Later, Akira goes to see Asuka in the hospital--after cruising around on a motorcycle, just because.

Asuka apparently has an AT Field.

Trouble brewing.
This next segment is one of two I could have cut. It's a side story paralleling Akira's action and setting the tone for things to come. Of the two in this volume, this is the strongest of them. Later volumes have these asides--stories of Demons killing and slaughtering people around Akira that he misses.

Meanwhile, Akira and his foster family sit around the living room. Here's the one highlight from it:

Oh, Values Dissonance. The kid is Miki's little brother. He's as pervy as anyone else in a Go Nagai series.
It gets worse as Akira makes some luud comments about Miki's breasts swelling up from taking too many baths.
Yeah. I'm not posting that. That gets a full "God Damnit, Japan" from me.
Also, Selene arrives outside, summons two demons and prepares to kill Devilman. She summons a storm as well to mask their movements

Later, Miki goes to take a bath. Oh, Fanservice and Horror Tropes.

It menaces her unknowingly while Selene worries.

Selene decides to psyche herself up for the upcoming battle.

Ah, Ham. Yummy stuff.
Miki, after about 20-40 pages of being stalked, picks up that something isn't right.

The demon, BTW, is now the water she's bathing in.
Akira picks up that something isn't right--and wants to know where the fight's gonna be.

tensions builds as he waits--rather well, i gotta say.

The demon rises up behind Miki to nab her in a more frightened state. Because they like fear.

"THIS IS THE LAST TIME YOU PEE IN THE TUB, YOUNG LADY!"
Akira realizes where the danger is and rushes to save Miki. Screams do that.
Asuka senses something's wrong too.

Aklira her Parents half-phased through the walls and ceiling. They get better later, but for now, they're out and in danger thanks to the second demon Selene called.
The one from the vignette.
He tries to save Miki, but finds he can't bust down the door.

...
He just stabbed Agwell with his eyebrow Antennae!
AWESOME!
Anyway, Agwell is injured and retreats for the moment...

Say it with me now: DEVIL ARROW!

The zap Frees Miki, he grabs her and tries to run, only to be tripped by Agwell.
Miki then gets up and attacks him.

That third panel is Context For the Weak GOLD, I tells you!
Akira rips of Agwells head, killing him and takes Miki to her room.
Ghelmer follows, so he throws a bed sheet at him. Then...DEVIL BEAM!

Ghelmer's water evaporates, leaving him quite vulnerable.

But...what happened to Selene.

Ahem:

Akira, seeing this as the end, begs for death.

We later find out that the big demon that scared Amon back in the day in the ice? Yeah. That's Xenom: leader of the Demon's army.
Asuka steals a motorcycle and is rushing to Akira's aid.

Which begs the question, how the hell Asuka knows all that?
Curiouser and Curiouser.
Asuka gets on a hill where Selene is flying over and...

Selene, understandably, is pissed.
So she calls on Go Nagai's favorite trope.

ROCKET PUNCH!
Asuka is gravely injured again, but the real fight is about to begin!
And they fight!
It goes back and forth, with Selene taking the brunt of the punishment ---it's all quite brutal -- until she reveals that she's not quite disarmed as things appear.
She has it slash his arm and then....
Looks like he's been Disarmed!
...
Okay.
She even has it SPIN! It nearly guts Devilman.
Devilman realizes that her antennae control it and locks antennae with her. It comes towards them and...
Ow.
Devilman beats on her for a while, ripping off one of the wings on her head. She flees and begs Xenom for help.
He sends reinforcements.
Yes. Even these bloodthirsty, battle-hungry monsters can...love.
They proceed to kick Devilman's ass, electrifying him with Kaim's horn-based thunderbolts and then impailing him and tossing him like a rodeo bull. Devilman fades back into Akira and waits for the end.
But it doesn't come.
Wait, Asuka, weren't you almost killed too?

From here on out, the series gets even DARKER.
Volume 3 is a series of short encounters for the most part, so I'll pick and choose which ones I'll go with--but there are two that are certain to show up: The story of an another Devilman, who doesn't have the control or power of Akira; and the battle against Jinmen--one of the most EVIL of demons to show up in this series.
And given what's going to happen, that's saying something.

Date: 2010-11-08 11:48 pm (UTC)I wonder, is Silen just that one original character in Devil Man, or is she a common character in Japanese mythology?
Because the Guardian Force Siren from Final Fantasy 8 has got head-wings that looks just like that, plus the identical name (save the usual r/l switch with Japanese names).

Date: 2010-11-09 12:09 am (UTC)Either works, really. Given the Greek Sirens were originally Bird Women, it further conflates things.
She's basically Go Nagai's interpretation of a classical monster.
So I guess the FF ones are homages.

Date: 2010-11-09 03:55 am (UTC)Are we sure they aren't demons too? They certainly look the part. Maybe they are the demononic equivlent to Team Rocket? I want to take this seriously but between the freakish Gonk bullies and everything about Miki the walking 'Goddamn it Japan' joke it's just so hard. Otherwise this series looks so awesome.

Date: 2010-11-09 04:40 am (UTC)But don't worry--the bullies disappear after the next volume for the most part, and Miki has less "God Damnit, Japan" moments and more Awesome.
Or maybe my brain is geared towards blocking such moments from my memory...

Date: 2010-11-09 12:51 pm (UTC)Devilman, Parasyte and Guyver hold a special place in my heart as series that introduce potentially world-changing bad guys/events and then...have them CHANGE THE WORLD. In a volume or so, Shit Gets Real.
