Helloooo scans_daily, and welcome to Day 8 of our 30 Days of Winter series. Today we're experiencing Rrrrrromance, dahlings.

In 1966, my mother had a boyfriend. But some time later.. my mother no longer had this boyfriend. The boyfriend.. was now my uncle's.

Drama! Intrigue! Family history.

Alas - I am not talking about a human boyfriend. My lack of capitalisation, in fact, makes me a liar. We're speaking of The Boyfriend Book annual, 1966.

Which featured a lot of things. Quizzes? Yes!

Photobucket

HUNKS? Why, of course!

Photobucket

Hot. Actually, the ability to roast meat would be a dealbreaker/maker for me.

Articles about the hip issues of the day? Well, obviously.

Photobucket

It's true you know. F'rex, George was very talented at wearing great trousers.

But most importantly, it also had comics.

Like this one - "One Life Between Two". Great title.

As with what sometimes seems like all romance comics, it's about a madwoman who wants to control everything, and a horrible man who treats her like a worm. The dude wants to go in some cave for some reason.

Photobucket

The girl really doesn't want him to. She has a lot of suggestions about how to stop him.. But when sis joins in? Oh, no, suddenly it's going too far!

Photobucket

Stroppy.

She tries to get his pal Colin in on the dissuasion, but.. it doesn't really work. Friends are no good! This panel seems very funny to me.

Photobucket

Ray is just as fickle as his chick, though, once he figures out that NO-ONE wants him to go into the cave.

Photobucket

Poor Colin, indeed!

Photobucket

THEY ARE SO IN LOVE.

Photobucket

This panel lets us know that Ray is doing his cave exploring at night, like all sensible spelunkers.

Photobucket

When loving lovers love..

Photobucket

No really, Ray, really, it's a bat, Ray, it's really a bat! Ray!

I think that her flailing sets off an avalanche, which they escape. Hurray! The end! Romance!

Photobucket

Sweet as anything.

Let's try another!

Photobucket

Classic: Girl hits boy. What does girl do?

She makes up a crazy lie! Of course!!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Yes, for some strange reason.

They go and visit her fiancee, who isn't pleased to meet her new fake boyfriend. I don't know why, he must just be a jerk. But anyway, Marion isn't pleased with his reaction, which leads to her use of this great British version of "step off" or "go away and die":

Photobucket

Way harsh, Marion!

But not only that. She decides not to marry stupid Robert, which is a big romantic tragedy..

Photobucket

She's a role model.

They go to her brother's place, who is more welcoming than Robert. But he thinks Dreamboy is putting on his amnesia!

Photobucket

It's nice to see a brother accepting his sister's "intimate personal life" like that, huh? No judgement.

BUT WAIT

Robert's back, you guys!

Photobucket

I'll miss him.

Photobucket

Aaaand we're done.

Photobucket

Aren't they just the sweetest? Three cheers for manly pride!

And a final quiz to cheer you up.

Photobucket

So, dearhearts.. what's your favorite romance (or romantic) comic? Make us all melt! And tell us your quiz results in the comments.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's theme: Girrrrrrl comics.

And our full 30 Days of Winter calendar is here; don't get caught short!

Eeee, thrilled to see "give over" used in comics dialogue.
Much more so than to see "You forced yourself on me with a vengeance" as the rationale for a happy couple's union.

omg awwwww @ the "WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER TWO?" article. I love you, George and Ringo.

I really like the art in the comic. Very chic. And I'm a sucker for black and white art with selective dashes of color.

Favorite romance comics...Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, Scott Pilgrim (SP is totally a romance comic), Mars, selective bits of Ai Yazawa's works...

As usual I have a lot of favourite romantic stories... It's just that none of them happens to be comics, or at least, my main attachment isn't to the comic-book version (like "Most romantic proposal ever" Planetes, or the anime version of RahXephon which manages to make it's central love story work despite the... Weirdness, of it)

Spider-Man loves Mary Jane, of course. And if it was my favourite *pairing* it would be much easier...

Apparently I will go after anything in trousers and am probably an embarrassment (to who? Humanity in general?)

Eh. It's a fair cop.

And I do feel glad for having read the "please take me to the hospital (I think I may have organ damage)" story!

OK, the 'Ray, it's a bat!' bit, both the original and your commentary, made me chuckle like a madman. Personally, if I were in her shoes, I'd be THRILLED. 'RAY, HOLY CRAP, IT'S A BAT! OH OH OH, LET ME GET MY CAMERA, THIS IS SO COOOOOOL!' Or, eh... words to that effect.
Err... do the parts of 'Metal Men' where Tina is wooing Doc Magnus count? 'Cause if so, those are my favorites. Otherwise, I can't really think of anything - romance comics are not really my thing.

My Evasion-having rogue/barbarian once took no damage despite being trapped in the bottom of the canyon during a 100d6 avalanche, as did the party monk. While the rest of the party was rolling new characters, we spent the better part of a week trying to figure out exactly what, in practical terms, the two of us actually did down there when the snow hit.

I'm guessing that would be classified as 'sheer luck'. That's certainly what I more or less ran on during my brief experience with D&D. Every time I played, I wound up being the butt-monkey for a more powerful character who treated me like crap and used me as a living danger detector. I got picked up and thrown into booby traps, I got lightning bolts directed at me while I was in the middle of a lake, I got strapped to the mast of a ship during a thunderstorm... If it weren't for sheer luck and good rolls of the dice, I wouldn't have lasted five minutes.

Ya' know... Georgie Fame is STILL damn good-looking.

I always wanted to cast him as a super-villain, somewhere...

I'm surprised that it took so long for someone to say that!
And the art in that last story is just great - do you have a credit?

That was so frustrating about British comics, pre-2000AD: no credits. I have no idea who some of my favourite artists where and I when I started reading Marvel, I was immediately impressed by the extensive credits. (It was always fascinating to see the differences between John Buscema inked by Joe Sinnott and John Buscema inked by Tom Palmer!)
Would you mind looking the artists name up? I'd really appreciate it. Wonder does he have any other work here on Scans?
ps who is your icon?
