2 of my favourite panels from books that I picked up this week. The first is from the Jamie McKelvie drawn back up to Invincible Iron Man #33. Like his story in Ultimate Spider-man #150, it's a story told without dialogue. Good Morning Tony was excellent as a short vignette in what being Tony Stark means now and how you can tell the story of his life quickly and easily. Look at all of the information and character that this panel underneath conveys.

If it wasn't for Basri's artwork, I might have dropped Power Girl. I'm not reading Generation Lost, because it doesn't interest me. Except now, it seems that I am reading Generation Lost. Boo.

Still, I do like this picture of Karen getting a hello of a surprise at her desk.

Can we put this"SURPRISE BUTTSECKS!!" joke, which is essentially "she looks like she's being raped up the arse! - lol" out to pasture.

For a start, it's generally poor form to have a rape-lol joke going about in what's supposed to be a safe space.
For another, it's objectifying to assume that only one thing can put a wide eyed and open mouthed expression on a woman's face - theforcible insertion of a foreign object into her rectum.

Or am I being a party pooper?

Toilet jokes, mocking ridiculous facial expressions and body postures yes. If you see any rape jokes point them out.

Given the amount of "LOL Robin's tied up and is about to become somebody's sex toy" stuff, I'm not particularly sure.

I think I do

while I see your(stubbleupdate's) point, and you're right that it is kinda icky, we have images of Robin(and other boy wonders) being tied up and all sexed up against their wills all the time, and that's *not* shunned. Matter of fact, it's often applauded.

it seems like a double standard. Are we comfortable with sexual exploitation of one gender, but not the other? I suspect that some people might, in fact, be. But that doesn't really seem fair, or even handed.

That's my takeaway, anyway.

I agree with this. If we're going to declare a moratorium on jokes in poor taste, we have to do it across the board, which will probably spell an end to the 'context is for the weak' running joke.

It's not just you. I agree entirely. Rape jokes are specifically banned by the community's rules already. I would like the community to enforce this rule.

So the big reveal in the first panel is that Tony gets mobile phone reception when others don't? Not THAT impressive an ability I must confess.

You have to be very careful to hold it, not grip it, otherwise you'll end up with a dropped call.

Or just get a Stark Industries case for it.

It's actually just that they're only getting the first bar. Phone reception doesn't work so much like a chart as it does a series of lights that blink on as the higher the reception is.

No, all the signal bars run the same way, it's just that they have no 'high' bars showing on any one other than Tony's phone.

Question--why can't we have McKelvie doing Iron Man forever? I mean, I don't necessarily HATE Laroca's work--most of the time--but I'd much rather see Tony as drawn by McKelvie instead of that douchy looking dude from Lost that Laroca always references from.

This!

And the way how Larocca draws- it's as if someone crushed his hands, or he has a nerve problem. So the characters look really shaky and grotesque. I know that people crow over the fact that Larocca makes deadline, but... yeesh.

I totally agree rape jokes about women are in poor taste. I know the same jokes would have come up if it was a guy instead of PG; but I see it as less funny when it's about a woman just because so many of us HAVE been sexually assaulted. A lot of these "but we would have said the same thing about a dude!" jokes are true, but how many of your guy friends have to watch their drinks at bars? Have been told "well, look at how he was dressed?! He was asking for it".

Basically, society has a lot of fucked up opinions on how raping women is funny, and it's sad because it happens. On the other hand, the comic fandom is a boy's club and I don't doubt for a minute that I'm not changing any minds here.

I shouldn't be laughing at your PDD guesses because I'm trying to say something serious....
gimme a sec.

WHOO okay.

About the rape jokes, well, they're just jokes, and they're not specific to women either.... And not many people actually connect SURPRISE BUTTSEX to rape, it's pretty much the same as every single green joke in this comm. If we consider one joke as offensive as this, then all jokes in this comm are and how many do you see popping up here every single day?

Just saying, the negative connotations are lost in everyone understanding it's just a joke, it's meant to be funny, it's not exclusively offensive and it's not trying to hurt anyone...

The reason it's a joke is when nothing like that is happening.

(Not that I consider this a good example of a 'surprise buttsex' joke anyway. Whoever made that joke is obviously attempting to repeat a meme just to be part of the crowd. It happens.)

Whenever Real Rape is actually occurring, it is not a 'surprise buttsex' moment, therefore not funny. This is why men who are being raped isn't funny, but Robin tied up is, and a woman tied up isn't funny.

Nor is 'surprise buttsex' supposed to be rape. It's supposed to be the same order as 'you were both walking around naked, you fell and got his dick stuck in you' kind of absurdity.

Please don't make me talk about my own experiences with sexual assualt to 'validate' my opinion on this.
