sherkahn: Monarch from the Venture Brothers (The Monarch)

AintItCool has the scoop. And I am surprised how many characters may be involved in this thing.

At this point I don't know WHO to believe is in this movie until it is released.
(Mind you, I do understand that the possibly misleading last post about this film came from me.).

From the article:

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Ok, so we may not be seeing contemporary Selina, but more the 90's version.

And if they play it smart, Hardy's Bane will be more "super soldier/tactical genius" than muscle bound freak.

For legality, 90's Catwoman, en Espanol.

That basta$& ruined any chance of Renee Montoya will ever appear in a film.

Because after the success of Dark Knight (1 dollar in 8 that WB made that year was from Dark Knight), when Dark Knight Rises is done, WB will give up making Batman films, or films based on the Batman property?

Well, given the success of the movie and it's potential followups, I seriously doubt when the non-comic audience will see Renee Montoya as "Oh, she's that fierce loyal cop who has had a rough life". They'll think back to the Dark Knight and remember "Oh, she's the non-concausion female cop who works for Gordon, and was responsible for Rachel getting killed! Wonder what horrible deed she'll do in this one?"

The role has been labeled.

That's reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally pushing it. I complete forgot that that was even her in that role and I saw the movie 3 times when it was in theaters.

I mean, come on, I think you're getting pretty hyperbolic here.

Not really, I just look at we've been given, and what we've been given certainly didn't do any female character any favors. I think my low expectations for Catwoman have some merit here.

No one's talking about Catwoman. They're talking about your ridiculous belief that the general audience is going to be prejudiced against "Ramirez," when she was in the movie for like five minutes.

In point of fact, that character was NOT actually Renee Montoya. She had another name, and in fact, I think (I could be wrong) they specifically avoided making her Renee because they didn't want to damage the character.

It's still enough to have a suggestion like "How about we introduce the character of Renee Montoya?" and get a "We've already done a character like that in the Dark Knight" as a response.

Sure, they didn't damage her character, but her character's role is already taken.

The scenario here is when Nolan leaves the franchise and they bring on a new director to take it in a new direction. No one's going to care that Nolan used a Latino woman first.

I disagree. Simply because the cop in question was hispanic and female doesn't mean that she's 'taken' Renee's role - she's not Renee, and she did things Renee would not do. I don't think it's particularly unlikely that there would be more than one female Hispanic detective in a bustling urban police department like Gotham's - if they want to introduce her, nothing's stopping them. They simply have to make her character different from the first cop, which shouldn't be too difficult - it's been a little while since I saw 'Dark Knight', but I don't remember her as a character who had much impact or did a hell of a lot. In order to legitimize Renee as her own character, simply make sure that DOES make more of an impact, and has room to do her own thing.
