[personal profile] sherkahn posting in [community profile] scans_daily
On a previous post this past week I put up some beef cake that seemed to have the best word-of-mouth in the Hollywood community of portraying Clark Kent/Superman in film.

Looks like I was wrong, and the rumors untrue. And I am willing to admit it.

The man has been cast.

The HONOR and the TITLE of being The Last Son of Krypton, the Man of Steel, the Man of Tomorrow, the greatest hero of the DC pantheon goes to....

Henry Cavill, last seen by many on the Tudors.

The actor was almost Batman, almost Green Lantern, almost Bond... but he gets another iconic character instead.

He's got the acting chops, but by Krypton he has got to get into shape.

And for legality,

Mr. Kent is not a complete stick-in-the-mud.

Yes that's nice but WHAT ABOUT LOIS? WHO WILL PLAY HER?
(yes I know she hasn't been cast yet)

Lois' casting is just as important as Superman/Clark's. In my opinion one of the biggest flaws of Superman Returns was Kate Bosworth's utterly blah Lois Lane. And, you know, the whole deadbeat dad thing. My current favorite is Rashida Jones; I think she can pull off the sublimely intelligent, vibrant Lois that is equal to Superman.

Also I never expected to ever see the phrase "shake your bootie" in connection with Clark. Wow.

Agreed with all of this. I quite liked Returns, but Lois nearly sent me to sleep, which just Should Not Happen.

I thought Emma Stone would have made a phenomenal Lois, but she got cast as Gwen Stacy in the next Spider-Man reboot, and I think that disqualifies her.

I liked Rashida Jones on The Office, and I guess I could see her as Lois. I'm not sure she'd be my first choice though.

I think Natalie Portman could make an excellent Lois. She has the acting chops and she has the knack for portraying intelligent, thoughtful characters, which I think is key for someone playing Lois Lane.

Oooh, Rashida Jones is an excellent suggestion. I like her work a lot and she can do both assertiveness and a dry sense of humor really well.
A strong Lois is very important and Bosworth was just not it.

My personal favourite would probably be Maggie Gyllenhaal, but I guess getting blown up by the Joker kind of throws you out of the race.

I'm hoping for Anne Kendrick as Lois. She has been nominated for an Oscar (for Up in the Air) and has "geek cred" from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and the Twilight movies. (Her character, Jessica Stanley, seemed to be the only Twilight character without an anxiety disorder.)

Who wants to bet he won't really bother with barbells, like Brandon Routh?

Where's the second scan from? If it's Silver Age, I can use it as evidence against the countless misguided fanboys who think 'classic' Clark is a useless wimp that nobody likes but Jimmy Olsen.

If only because I suspect the song he's dancing to is KC and the Sunshine Band's "Shake Your Bootie", I'm guessing it's from the seventies.

Cavill was almost Superman in SUPERMAN RETURNS, actually. He was in the final two, but didn't test very well in costume (he had a very lean build at the time, and supposedly just didn't look the part), so it went to Routh.

I haven't seen anything he's done, but he's got the whole square jaw look down. Yeesh, you could use that jaw as a ruler.

And Seventies Clark Kent can bust a groove alright.

I saw him in the very underrated "Stardust". Fun film.

He looks the part. Now they have the really hard part. The COSTUME. It should look like the comics costume, but still not look so dang goofy.

Henry Cavill needs to get in shape? That was sarcasm, right?

This strikes me as a good choice. I thought he was quite good on The Tudors, and he has the right look for the part. He's 6' 1'', though, according to imdb, when Clark is supposed to be about 6' 3'' or 6' 4". That's may not sound like such a big deal, but it's the difference between a man who is tall in an ordinary way and a man who is usually the tallest one in the room.

Are cleft chins really that uncommon? I mean, hell, I've got one, and I'm a chick (luckily, it's shallow enough that it's usually not very visible, because cleft chin really isn't all that attractive looking on your average female face). But yeah, that's a plus for a Superman actor!

Interesting choice. I've only ever seen him in The Tudors, but since that breezed by happily without too much of a plot, I don't know what to say other than he looks really hot in a suit of armor.
Also, fuck yeah! Chest hair!

Not sure I agree about The Tudors not having much of a plot, since it is fairly historically accurate and rather a lot went on. Just it had more on screen rumpy-pumpy than previous televised versions.

In the comics Superman was consistently drawn with a hairy chest in the 80s and 90s. And didn't you watch Superman II? Reeves was hairy too.

Requiring Superman to be super-muscly has always struck me as silly. His muscles still don't correlate at all with his strength unless you made them the size of like, actual mountains or something.

I mean you want an actor in decent shape cause the audience has to watch him in spandex for an entire movie, but Superman doesn't particularly have to be a bodybuilder. It's not like either Reeves especially was.

Christopher Reeve famously had to work out rigourously once he got the role (and was coached by none other than David Prowse). I think it just kind of asks too much suspension of disbelief to have some scrawny guy punching people out right and left, regardless of his backstory.

Ugh. Not impressed by the casting choice. His acting work has done nothing for me. The only way they are getting my money at all is dependent on Lois now and since there are only like three actresses (and they are not likely at all) that could get me to pay, I get to save money.

It's just as well, won't Superman likely be up against Avengers in theaters? Because if that's the case, Marvel wins my money hands down.

He's a very good-looking man, but his acting always leaves me feeling a bit “meh”. Maybe if they cast my dream Lois, Gabrielle Union, as the new movie!Lois I could get excited. As it is I'm still pretty underwhelmed by this project. It's not at NERDRAGE levels like when I think about the new Spidey movie, but I really do expect the film to be a disappointment.
