scans_daily | Volstagg: Warrior, God, Father of Hildy

Four pages from Thor: Whosoever Wields This Hammer. Most of the book is the reprinting of several old Thor stories with new colors, but it also gives us the framing device of Volstagg being put in charge of his unruly offspring under the threat of no nookie.

And it has Hildy, who as you all know, I adore.

Sadly, no sign of Kevin and Mick, but we can't have everything.

Great to see Volstagg reunited with his kids! I like the Kirbyesque style (particularly to Volstagg and Hildy)

Second, while I'm sure the rest of his brood went on to have great skull-smashing careers and be generally awesome, it must be recognized that...

HILDY IS THE TRUE HEIR OF VOLSTAGG!

Third, I love how Hildy is all, "Whatever Odinson, we just got the V-facts. We don't need your fan-sub."

Fourth, Volstagg needs his lovin'!

Fifth, Hildy needs to travel to Midgard as a young woman and either join the Young Avengers or form a new Warriors Three.

If she forms the new W3. It must be her, Molly Hayes and Bill, Born of Bills.

Personally. I'd use her foster-brothers for some Warriors Three goodness involving her, but they could have Awesome Team-Ups.

Also, I'd just bet that when she married Volstagg, his wife was a little 150-pound weakling...while he hasn't changed a bit since marriage...

I like this, but am not sure about the art: I get the Kirby homage, but I don't think it quite works.

Also, Hildy is drawn far too ladylike here, in both appearance and body language.

Didn't Volstagg adopt two hispanic kids? Or did I imagine that? I thought I read something about that in one of the Essential X-men volumes...

Still, this looks really adorable. One of the only problems I had with the movie was the lack of volume Volstagg had.

It does remind me of something I wondered about while watching the Thor movie, when Odin's boys were introduced as children. At what rate do Asgardians age? How long did it take wee!Thor and wee!Loki to become adults, and how long will they stay at the ages we knew them at?

The badass of Volstagg is known even to casting directors. Looking up Thor, I noticed that Ray Stevenson, who portrayed him in the movie, was also known for playing another famous Marvel character...

Good thing War Zone bombed, and Lionsgate gave up the rights to The Punisher soon after. So Frank Castle belongs to Marvel Studios now-- which means a movie where Frank encounters Volstagg, while unlikely, is now a possibility.

These designs just lack character. The kids are all wearing basically the same thing, and are all (roughly) the same size. I'd be hard-pressed to tell one from another.
