Comic Book Resources has an advanced preview up of Mark Waid/Paulo Rivera/Marcos Martin's upcoming DAREDEVIL run. Waid's said that while the book's still going to be rooted in noir, it won't be as dark or tragic as recent runs. He wants to bring back some of the swashbuckling Matt Murdock of the old days. As he put it, "With all due respect to the last ten years, it would be nice to finish an issue without feeling like I need a stiff drink."

Wow. I can see that they're still trying to keep the more noir/crime-based influences and not drop them wholesale, but this easily looks to be the most positive Daredevil's been in years.

Perhaps Shadowland was good for something after all..

That image of Spot in Daredevil-Scope...I have had NIGHTMARES that look like that. *shudder*

Yeah, I had a similar reaction. Except it was that I've had CHEESE on SANDWICHES that looks like that.

I do (generally) like the 'turn everything into orienteering maps'-vision they're representing the radar sense with, though.

Kinda reminds me of the game Devil's Tuning Fork. Watch the video, you'll see what I mean.

That is actually one of the greatest images I have ever seen from comics. Obviously not in the amazing art, or beautiful people way, and the spot typically does not have a mouth or eyes, but just in the concept way. I am very impressed at how they managed to image that.

So this is going to be the Grant Morrison's Batman to the previous Daredevil's 90's Batman riff then?

We can only hope. Brubaker's run was so miserable I felt like cutting my wrists.

That's lovely clean art for a new mood in Daredevil. And as much as I loved Bendis' run, I was surprised how dreary the same story got under Brubaker and Diggle. They can both do better. So yes, a change will be great, and I'm definitely going to pick up this title again to see what happens.

Yeah

I know I'm supposed to like to brubaker, in the same way I'm supposed to like miles Davis's experimental jazz: butni just don't. And, frankly, I don't think anyone else does either.

I loved the Brubaker run, especially the first arc. Chilling and fantastic.

But this looks good. And Spot is a good villain for Daredevil. Seeing Daredevil avoid those holes was pretty cool.

Wow, it's in the daylight?

I used to read DD back in teh day, and I don't think I've ever seen it so light.

I hear you brah. I hear you.

A positive Daredevil that's still noir-y? WHAT. ERROR. DOES NOT COMPUTE.

Okay, on a more serious note, two things:

1) That artwork is gorgeous. Seriously, it's beautiful while still being artsy and comic-y and not pseudo-realistic. Huge kudos.

2) Daredevil-POV-Spot could rival the Anti-Monitor for most terrifying-looking villain ever. I think I've had nightmares like this.

Since I haven't pulled any Marvel comics on a regular basis for a long time, I'm always keeping an eye out for stuff that looks cool. This is looking very good to me.

Holy crap. The Spot doing something competent for a change! He always had a very effective power (like Magik), limited only by his uncreative use of it.

Maybe he just woke up and realized Zatanna screwed with his mind?

Actually he reminds me of Tempest from Atari force, who used the portal-disconnected limbs trick a lot more creatively than I think Magik has ever done (Which given her other resources isn't that surprising)

I don't know, I feel like dark and gloomy are necessary sometimes, and it fits for certain heroes. How are they going to reconcile happy Matt Murdok after the everything in the Bendis, Bru, and Diggle run.

Remember, the DARK stories are the ones that made Daredevil popular. Don't make him too light.

On the flip side, Daredevil(like Batman) is a character that works well without the constant "Let's make the protagonist's life completely miserable" drama. Karl Kessel's underrated run is a good example of that.

I mean, I like "Born Again" as much as the next guy, but I think I had my fill of "Make Murdock's life fucking horrible, then rise from the ashes" storyline for awhile.

I agree with this - as much as most of the Marvel universe needs some lighting up, there's some books that just call for it, and DD seems like one of those for me. I'm rereading Bendis' run at the moment, and it just fits so well with the character. Mostly though, I don't like cartoon-y art for DD. It's lovely, but after years of realistic, frankly impressive artwork, it doesn't really suit the book.

Ah well.
