For someone who has been dead for, what, 7, 8 years, Jean's been on a lot of comic book covers. Guess it kinda makes sense, though. In 2011, IGN ranked her 13th in the Top 100 comic books heroes.
According to editor Nick Lowe, she's staying dead, though.
I really don't think these cancellations/relaunches are that huge a deal, but they do make it difficult to provide references for new readers. With a long-running series like Uncanny X-Men, if someone wants to know about an event that happened a while ago, it's easy to say, "Check out issue #xxx." With so many cancellations and relaunches, it becomes harder to isolate those issue numbers.
It's not as huge a deal with Uncanny X-Men, but with some books, when you say, "Check out issue #12," it's now a matter of, "which issue #12?" It seems to me like keeping a consecutive numbering makes past stories easier to reference, thus making it more likely that new readers will go back and read up on the history of these characters, thus getting them more invested in the comics and wanting to continue reading.
All this is filtered through the fact that I am not an industry professional and therefore might be off-base, but it really seems to me that, as with character deaths and resurrection, these instances of advertising a "Final Issue!" only to relaunch with an "Exciting new #1!" is chasing short-term sales in an industry that really needs more patience in pursuing new long-term readers.
Why do long-running titles need to end again? The idea that the number scares new readers is ridiculous. They're not looking at the number, they're looking at THE UNCANNY X-MEN and the cover. Get that last one popping and you're golden.
Particularly amusing is the fact that a lot of these relaunches don't re-tell a character's origins. They also tend to reference past continuity. So if someone is interested by a new #1 and wants to learn more about the comic's history, they have to track down entirely different volumes, anyway.
I'm a Hulk fan. The Hulk has three #1 issues, with a fourth one on the way whenever his book gets relaunched again. Of those #1s, only the original in 1962 serves as an introduction to the character. The second #1 starts a boring story that went nowhere, and the third #1 introduced the red Hulk and seemed to assume that the reader had first read World War Hulk. None of those #1s served as a good jumping on point, and none of them provided a long-term sales boost.
As to the actual cover, it looks like Hank McCoy is about to hug the reader with his penis.
Also, with Action Comics, Batman, Detective Comics, and Uncanny X-Men all getting rebooted, what is the longest-running comic left that hasn't been canceled or renumbered?
Since Schism is about Cyclops and Wolverine having a falling out, I guess this means the X-Men will be split into at least two factions and there will be two new X-Men team books. Hopefully they have better names than Xtreme X-Men.
The 90's are dead and gone, thank god. I don't think we'll have to worry about sinking that low, but its a new decade, and its a deep ocean.
One of the things I am looking forward to greatly is X-Force coming out in the open, and what happens even if it doesn't. It's clear that Logan and Scott are going to be the two leaders, but how does Logan expect people to follow him when he's leading a mutant kill-team behind everybody's backs. Even the people on that team don't like it very much. It will certainly alienate almost all of the older members.
So Scott set up the kill team, Angel's ON the kill team, and Jean's dead.
That just leaves Bobby and Hank, of the original members, to register opinions. I think Hank's a no, but even so, that's at least 50% in favour, of the original X-Men.
Close. Scott set it up and then disbanded it. Logan and Warren are carrying it on now without his knowledge. The only people who know are them, Wade, Fantomex, and Betsy. And I don't know about what Warren will be like. I think this AoA arc their on could have significant ramifications for him.
But just by having this team, the people who rigth off the bat would say no: Iceman, Storm, Professor X, and Hank. Those people carry a lot of weight in the X Men, and thats just the tip of the iceberg. I honestly don't see how Wolverine comes out on top for Schism.
Meh. They'll be relaunched in time for Christmas. I seriously need to let this series go already. It used to be golden, but for the past several years, it's largely been terrible.
Pfff...I stopped reading the book long ago. It started going downhill around the late 90s, got even worse with Austen, and then having LAAAND as the principle "artist" was the icing on the cake.
So this? Not really mourning it. The X-Men have been over for me for over a decade anyway.
I'm more and more interested in Schism as time goes on. Gonna have to pre-order me some copies.
Uncanny cancellation aside, here's hoping that Kieron Gillen and Namor will both be staying with the X-Men in some capacity. Awesome writer and severely underused character.
