Au Revoir, Señor Bane

Even though we are going to lose the neat Comic Book known as "Secret Six", amigos, I think we should focus on the good things that we saw on it. Today I am proud to give you one excellent moment from the great Bane.

By the way, these pictures are from Secret Six # 34. These are 6 pages out of a story of 20 pages, which means that this post is acceptable.

Our epic moment starts with Bane having a neat date at an amusement park. All of us know that things are going to get interesting.







I find it interesting that Bane seems to acknowledge the fact that his life went into a spiral of despair after defeating Batman. It is great to see that he has conquered his inner demons and be able to enjoy his date.



I hope these thugs made peace with whatever God they worship because they are about to be broken by Bane.

This is an interesting way to have a date and I am pretty sure Bane would appreciate his well deserved reward, hehehehe.

You will be missed, Señor Bane as well as the rest of the Secret Six.

The attitude of those thugs reminded of the enemies that seem to appear a lot in Hokuto no Ken where the main character knows a martial art that makes people explode yet all his opponents think they can stand a chance.

I had the same thought. I mean, okay, maybe you don't know he's fucking Bane. He's still like 7 feet tall and built like a terrible monster. I guess they figured having four guys would make the difference.

Carnies didn't never learn no maths, after all.

Well, Bane's built like a bodybuilder, and a lot of bodybuilders don't know jack about actually fighting, and would be pretty useless against four guys with bats and crowbars. Most fighters, apart from the upper weights of boxer, aren't that huge.

That's what always drives me nuts about comic book goons. Look, even if I have a four-to-one advantage against a giant bruiser, when he takes out the first two guys in three seconds? I'm fuckin' leaving. I can do math, and just like those carnies, I don't have health insurance.

I think Gail Simone set up his return to villainy quite well. What would be a better motivator for returning to evil ways than to find that what you thought was a redemption meant nothing and that you were pre-ordained to an eternity in Hell no matter what you did?

As much as I've enjoyed anti-hero Bane, I look forward to whatever big plans they have for him leading up to The Dark Knight Rises.


On a related note, as much as I love almost everything Simone does, I hate the way she stunted his speech. All through Nightfall he talked as though he was very familiar and comfortable with English. Logically, it may not have been his first language, but here was a man every bit as intelligent as he is strong and it showed in his speech. He may not have been erudite like Ra's al Ghul, but he did speak intelligently and fluently in English.

The way she wrote him always seemed like an effort to remind us either that English was not his second language or that his social skills are incredibly retarded(meant literally, not as a comparison to those with mental disabilities), which just didn't seem to be a case originally. It was neat characterization, but I didn't feel like it fit with the man who engineered the Knightfall.

I thought Gail was reflecting some of the stuff Bane had been through recently. Before SEcret Six he had been re-addicted to Venom and a near slave until he broke out. Those leave marks on people....

Well everything about that is pretty stupid. To go through his hand it would have to be rotated 90º.
