From "Deadman and the Flying Graysons #1",
Following on from the preview here are less than three pages...
This is set in an alternative timeline where John and Mary Grayson never died, and instead have stayed as performing family, The Flying Graysons with their, now grown up, son Dick.
They are still with the circus, but due to other events in the Flashpoint timeline, they are stuck in Europe, the circus travelling from town to town, trying to avoid the Amazon incursions, and entertaining the catastrophe stricken towns they visit.
They are one of the star attractions of the circus, the other being Boston Brand, the aerialist known as "Deadman". Whilst the Grayson's trapeze act entertains and amazes, Brand performs scene-stealing, death-defying stunts. He's also a vain and arrogant loner who refuses to help out around the circus, because it's beneath his dignity (They Grayson's pitch in wherever help is needed, because that's what family does, and they view the whole circus as their family, and it's mutual)

Oh, Lord the thoughts going through my head with the three of them like that... seriously... the "good looks" genetics in that family are INSANE! The YES PLEASE aspect of Dick and John side by side (and if Mary were present, I'd certainly be willing to experiment) is offset slightly by the fact that the happy family dynamic is just so CUTE!
Later, as they prepare for a performance, Brand has a quick word with Dick.

And we see that in the next page

Sadly, sideshow act Doctor Fate (Yes, it appears to be the real one, but alternate timelines yadda yadda) it's hinted that a tragedy will soon befall this happy family (but maybe not the one we're used to, but which could be even more devastating!
But in the meantime, revel in the sheer delight of Dick with his proud parents...

Date: 2011-06-22 07:49 pm (UTC)Sorry bro, but this does feel a bit like an episode of the Care Bears. And I honestly am *trying* to like the Graysons, but... they sort of sicken me. :/

Date: 2011-06-23 12:02 pm (UTC)You can hardly blame them for using one of the most timeless, classic storytelling heroic arcs as a basis.

A depiction of a happy, caring family is "sickening"? That's... well, I'm not sure what I'd call that. A little depressing perhaps.

Date: 2011-06-23 05:04 pm (UTC)I would never call that sickening if I found it *convincing.* The Moomins, for example, are a happy, caring family for the most part - and I find those books very touching, and at times even profound (the later ones in particular deal with some very sophisticated ideas about life).
But this? To be fair it is only three pages, so I'm probably missing some of the subtleties, but I find it cloying. But thinking about it now, I realise that it's probably very important to anyone attached to the character of Dick, and I feel a bit bad for being tactless, so sorry about that.
But different strokes. And as Oscar Wilde once said "one must have a heart of stone to read the death of little Nell without laughing."
That doesn't mean he laughed at the death of tuberculotic orphans in real life. :)

Date: 2011-06-23 07:17 pm (UTC)It is the greatest treatise on human emotion ever written, with the possible exception of Tales from Moominvalley.

Date: 2011-06-23 07:57 pm (UTC)If I wanted odd but effective dissections of human emotion, I always had The Clangers (Who even had endorsement from the most unexpected places) and Bagpuss.

Date: 2011-06-23 08:10 pm (UTC)But... but that's the weakest one! I know it's a cliché to say that, but in this case it really is true. Or if it's not the weakest, it's definitely not up there among the GIANTS of Moomin literature.
Also 9 is a little too young to handle the Moomin weirdness, and certainly too young to handle its bleakness. The later books and Tales really *are* best read as an adult.

And the treatment of a guest star in a title bothers me a lot less than the ruddy TITLE CHARACTER!

Date: 2011-06-23 06:39 am (UTC)I realise I'm treading on sensitive territory here, but why did Dick sleeping with Cheyenne bother you so much? True it was pretty casual, but they both seemed to treat each other kindly and with mutual respect.

Date: 2011-06-23 07:22 am (UTC)You are remembering that this IS s_d, right?
why did Dick sleeping with Cheyenne bother you so much?
Basically because Dick takes relationships VERY seriously and never rushes into them (Devin Grayson penned Huntress one night stand to one side), it was actually a source of some tension in his relationship with Starfire. He tends towards the uptight about such things.
Him treating that sort of intimacy so casually just doesn't work for me.
And can you really be said to be showing that much mutual respect if you never planned on something as basic as each others NAMES?

Date: 2011-06-23 05:34 pm (UTC)Some people prefer sex without romantic attachment, particularly if they're career focused at the time. That doesn't make them dirty, or disrespectful, or motivated by misanthropy. I understand if you think it's OOC for Dick, but 'respect' is a slippery word when it comes to sexuality. Most of the time when someone describes another person's sexual behaviour as lacking in respect, what they really mean is "people should have sex the way I like to."
Because for all their moralising, I find that many people who oppose 'meaningless' sex really do so because they, personally, find the idea squicky.

Date: 2011-06-22 08:55 pm (UTC)Probably because it's a modern "imaginary story" where everything isn't all gloom and doom. Maybe because in this story (so far) the optimism of the Grayson Family is stronger that the cynicism of Boston Brand. Whatever the reason, I am happy with this story.
I am also glad to see Dick been the merry guy that we all love (to gag and bound in strange but sexy poses) because it reminds me of the good times he was with Batman and the New Teen Titans. I am glad that even in imaginary stories Dick Grayson remains a Boy Wonder.
