A comic book related glass making company called "Toon Tumblers" released on their Facebook page what appears to be Jim Lee's promotional spread for the new Justice League, part of which will be used on drinking glasses given out at this years San Diego Comic Con. As a result, we now have the complete line-up of the Justice League in the wake of the relaunch:

In the center, going from left to right, are the seven members we already know:
  • Aquaman
  • Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
  • Wonder Woman
  • Superman
  • Batman (Bruce Wayne)
  • The Flash (Barry Allen)
  • Cyborg

On the left side of the image, going from top to bottom, we have four additional members:
  • Deadman
  • The Atom (Ray Palmer)
  • Element Woman (from Flashpoint: Secret Seven)
  • Firestorm (Ronnie Raymond and Jason Rusch)

And on the right side, going from top to bottom, we have four more:
  • Green Arrow
  • Hawkman (Carter Hall)
  • A woman who could be either Zealot, Power Girl, or Miranda Shrieve (from Flashpoint: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown)
  • Mera

Call me crazy, but for some reason the redesigned costumes look a whole lot better when Jim Lee draws them.  Anyway, what do folks think?

The first thing I notice is that Superman's costume is simultaneously hideous and ridiculous. I actually like Wonder Woman's costume when it's drawn by Cliff Chiang (although I still want the Joan Jett-style costume he drew for her to be her actual, canonical costume), although it still does need shoulder straps, but here it looks laughably bad. The other costumes don't look different enough from the classic costumes to be interesting in any way.

This membership roster doesn't interest me. With a few additions, this basically looks like League-classic to me, which, frankly, seems to vitiate the whole idea of a reboot, or whatever they're calling this now. Why bother with making radical changes if you're not actually going to make radical changes?

Hype. PR. To draw eyes. The usual...

And as usual, it'll have little to no positive effect. People won't suddenly start reading DC comics because they're all labelled #1 again. Nor will they develop an interest in Bruce Wayne that goes beyond movies just because he's smeared liberally over a dozen different books.

Unfortunately, this stuff doesn't do much for existing readers, either. There's nothing in this world that can get me interested in Hal Jordan, and believe me I've tried. Same goes for Aquaman, the Flash (Barry Allen, at least) and most of the other characters getting pushed to the front of this reboot.

The characters I do like, Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, Donna Troy, Wally West, all seem to be getting shoved out of the way quite forcibly.

CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, at least, genuinely did have quite a positive impact on sales, regardless of whether one judges it a creative success.

I think it's easy for us to forget that the atmosphere of online fandom is often not at all reflective of actual buying habits. Otherwise, BLUE BEETLE would have DC's best-selling title.

As for the mass re-numbering is for the sake of the digital day-and-date initiative. Being able to purchase everything from #1 to #latest is going to look a lot more appealing than being able to purchase starting from #37 or whatever. From that angle, I think the re-numbering could have a positive impact on sales.
