Sailor Moon manga Chapter 14
Jun. 28th, 2011 06:52 pmSo, some of you may remember that in the distant past I was posting the first arc of Sailor Moon. You can see the first 13 chapters aaaaallll lined up in this tag!
Well, the reason I sort of stopped is that something extraordinary happened, and you've all probably heard about it by now- the Sailor Moon manga was announced to be released for reprint in September, as is Sailor V. The whole reason I was posting Sailor Moon pages here was that the manga was wonderful and so different even from the anime, but it had been long out of print, and the stuff that had come out in the US was badly translated, flopped and with outdated art to boot. So I wanted to expose people to the scanlation stuff available. But now, an excellent reprint with the updated art in it's original form and what is sure to be a proper translation at last are coming out! I encourage everyone who is a Sailor Moon fan to buy it and support Sailor Moon and this finally happening. You can preorder it on Amazon here as well as other sites. This should be way better than scanlations!
So, with this news and my sort of drifting away from s_d, I had no real motivation to post the rest of the manga-in fact, I don't want to spoil people for the reprints- but I felt I should at least post Chapter 14 to finish the arc and get the news out.. But various things came up (and I had a hard time picking out which pages to use and then I was figuring it had been so long I would look stupid posting about the rerelease, and next thing you know, months later.
But I was linking a friend my post on Mars's first appearance and was reminded of this, and figured I may as well post this- better late than never. At long last, the epic finale to the first arc of Sailor Moon, here to motivate you to pick up the reprints if you can and want to!
Facing off against Metallia, Sailor Moon gathers the power of the Moon Kingdom and her fallen friends. Luna even senses it up on the moon base and prays with her.

And so Usagi blows Metallia up and burns her alive.An amazing feat, but it takes a lot out of her.

Artemis, your crush is showing, I do like that Luna played a part and the Moon Kingdom was restored (the satellites will have a ball when they notice a random building popped up on the moon...)
Mamoru checks out his planet and figures it's just scratched and it will recover (expert diagnosis!) Then he finds Usagi...

He kisses her back to life, as you do. And they cuddle a bunch and rejoice in being together at last and you know, alive and not brainwashed.
But...! There's still a PRETTY HUGE PROBLEM!

Yeah, Mamoru has these neat psychometry powers in the manga that I guess have to do with being connected to the planet. That's how he gets visions of things and is able to find people. Never really explained in the anime, but it makes a lot of sense and fits with him being the guardian of earth.

YEAH THEY ALL DIED FOR YOU USAGI THEY'RE LYING IN POOLS OF BLOOD GLAD YOU FINALLY WISED UP
Not to be insensitive. Anyways, she's gonna fix this because she can do anything, especially for her friends! To the moon, says Luna!

Princesses are usually held up as role models to girls, from Disney Princesses to Wonder Woman. A lot of these princesses are really strong people and good role models, even badasses (like Usagi here) but the fact remains that the reason "princess" is an acceptable and popular goal for girls while "queen" is usually not, is that princesses are pampered and privileged, but wield no real power. A queen has responsibility, power, authority, and wanting to be one inherently means wanting to be in charge, a threatening goal for a girl to have. A princess is not in charge. She has no responsibility. In fiction, we rarely see out "princess" role models becomes queens, even if they by all rights should be. Women cannot be shown to gain authority. Queens are actually usually the evil ones, because a woman who has actually power must be bad.
Sailor Moon is a princess,which is attractive to girls but unlike most other princesses, she is explicitly shown to become a queen in the future. Queen of the whole world. She is the epitome of power and authority. And here, starting out as a princess, as a reward for saving the world, she is stated to have become queen. That is just something that is actually pretty rarely seen even with badass princesses in fiction? So I think it's great and just illustrates some of the stuff Sailor Moon subverts and how it celebrates women in power.

However, despite the Queenly status and all, Usagi is a citizen of earth now. Plus, there's no one to rule, Luna, did you think of that? With saving the world, she's gained power, so Usagi powers up and sets out to heal the entire world, especially her friends that sacrificed for her. And she does it!

Love these girls and there epic hugs so much. And Venus and Artemis! Aw! This moment of them reuniting is basically the core of the story right here.

Usagi is actually shown being a little more responsible in her everyday life what with getting up on time more often after her growth as a hero. Not something that was really shown in the anime, but it's a character beat in the manga.
Unfortunately, Rei sees a bad omen in the fire- a black moon! Oh noes.

SORRY REI NOT GOING TO HAPPEN

Mamoru will always tease Usagi even if they're all kissy fave now. After she takes off his Clark Kent glasses, they do some smoochin'. But then a giant cat faced ball falls out of the sky onto Mamoru's head in the middle of the makeout. I hate it when that happens. That's nothing compared to what falls out of the sky next.

SHE'S HEEEEEEERRRRRE! DUN DUN DUN.
Usagi, if your neck was broken you'd be dead, silly.
The girl claims she's Usagi Tsukino.

hahaha Mamoru is so traumatized oh god a five year old kissed me I feel so unclean spiral of despair . Buddy, you don't even know the half of it.

And so the first arc of Sailor Moon ends with a five year old girl literally dropping out the sky to interrupt the kissing couple and threatening our hero at gunpoint . Clearly the best.
The R manga is really WILDLY different than the anime season of the storyline, and in my opinion, about a million times better (the lack of nonsensical contrived breakups and filler, plus MOAR SAILOR PLUTO helps a lot) so I really recommend that everyone pick those volumes up when they come out! I've just given you a taste, so look forward to it,
I hope you guys have enjoyed my posts and maybe they've reminded or shown some of you how fun Sailor Moon is, despite the massive delay on the last one, and, I am just so happy the reprint is coming out! so this manga can be available to everyone again! I even wrote an essay in anticipation analyzing and explaining the manga at the time of the announcement that garnered a lot of attention for some reason. The manga just gets better from here, so if were interested in what you saw and can do so, pick up the reprint manga when it comes out! Also, pick up the rerelease of Codename wa Sailor V, the fabulous prequel manga to Sailor Moon that was responsible for launching the whole franchise. I've posted a bit of the first chapter here and did an overlong post describing/analyzing/gushing about the series here. For more rambling/screencaps/doujinshi of Sailor Moon, there's always my tumblr. (Sorry for the shameless self promotion, just trying to get more info about the manga and stuff out!)
I guess this post is sort of a goodbye to s_d since I don't really hang out here anymore for various reasons (I've quit DC with the reboot because of Babs, Cass and Steph anyway), though maybe I will still look in or even comment once in a blue moon. So thanks for everything! This community was the main reason I got into comics fandom, it taught me a lot, and there's a lot of great memories and people that were met here (I'm keeping in touch with most of you tho).
So yay comics! Yay Sailor Moon! Yay scans_daily!

Date: 2011-06-29 04:05 am (UTC)I want no part of Babsgirl, and the fact Steph and Cass didn't get a title (even though "all the robins" were supposed to) was just such a slap in the face, the fact they were even benched at all after all DC has done to them- I'm done, I can't anymore.
Awww ;u;
Date: 2011-06-29 02:27 am (UTC)But you're right, we are getting the reprint, so I suppose spoilers would be very tempting! I'm really excited about the reprint and definitely going to be nabbing all of it.
It was great seeing another BSSM post by you too. I think you really hit the nail on the head with the part about princesses too. One thing I definitely loved was that Usagi (and all the girls) may be princesses, but they're also fighters. And for Usagi, being princess is just one step before becoming queen. And ruling like, everything. And being an awesome queen at that.
Thanks for all the lovely times with BSSM! ;u;
But I hope you'll come back still.
Maybe when the reprint comes out, you can do previews or just posts like the others we have when something new comes out? (Maybe talk about the things that Naoko-sensei has in the manga w/the interviews and such?)

Date: 2011-06-29 03:33 am (UTC)I believe it was in an artbook's notes, perhaps? I remember seeing a comment she had written in one on an artbook scanslation site that said she was even forced to make the Starlight's hair longer because it was easier for making dolls.
Re: Awww ;u;
Date: 2011-06-29 03:41 am (UTC)I think the stuff about the Starlight's hair might have been in the artbooks, but I know she made other comments elsewhere. I'm sure sailormoonfans community over at LiveJournal would know. They're so on top of stuff over there...

Date: 2011-06-29 03:39 am (UTC)The manga anime and manga had their differences in the first two arcs to be certain, but I didn't think these were particularly radical until the 3rd arc. They made a mess of the whole thing after that. D:
I remember the first time I read this I couldn't believe all the stuff I had missed out on. I love not-mean Rei and Leader!Minako !!

Date: 2011-06-29 03:47 am (UTC)But the art is pretty standard shoujo-manga stuff, and it takes me right out of the story.
But yeah, the anime was pretty bad. I absolutely love the live-action version, though!
I also am abandoning DC comics. I'm sick of their false diversity, regressive story-telling, and distinct lack of respect for their fans. However, I am trying really hard to reconcile it with my want of Batwoman (who is one of my favorite characters and I have been so long for her comic) and The Unwritten (which is under Vertigo, part of DC). I don't know whether or not I should pick them up, because I DO want to send a message. :(

Date: 2011-06-29 04:11 am (UTC)I actually like the anime a lot even if I'm sometimes critical. Love the live action too.

Date: 2011-06-29 11:15 pm (UTC)My favorite Magical Girl series is Nanoha, but I also like Rayearth, Princess Tutu, Mai-Hime/Otome, etc.
I also like Utena, but I don't really consider it a Magical Girl series because of how fucked up it is.
So, generally the darker, post-modern, and action-y Magical Girl series.

Date: 2011-06-30 02:07 am (UTC)Ahh, I always meant to start Nanoha. It seems fairly popular. Rayearth was great too (I really wish CLAMP would do more stuff like it, but their worlds are just so all over the place now). I still need to start Mai-Hime and actually watch Princess Tutu. Lol. I think most people see Utena as a proper deconstruction, aversion and subversion of the genre and shoujo (and probably shounen) too (as compared to Madoka, but I won't touch that anymore).
I do like the bright and girly stuff too (like Ojamajo Doremi), but the action-y ones are definitely great, for so many reasons.
