Four scans from Captain America #1 by Ed Brubaker and Steve McNiven.

It's that time of year again: one of comics' established properties has a movie coming out, so that means it's time for some new miniseries, maybe a renumbering, and a story arc that includes bits of plot and character that coincide with whatever's happening in the film.

In this case that means that our story opens with the funeral of Peggy Carter, Steve's World War II girlfriend (for a bit) and Sharon's aunt (previously sister, soon to be great-aunt; incidentally, I do hope the movies keep the aunt thing rather than have her be Peggy's granddaughter, because that's less creepy), to be familiar to movie audiences, even though Comics Peggy and Sharon look a lot more like Anna Torv than Hayley Atwell (and also, not British).

So Peggy has passed away at the spritely age of 91:

This sweet moment is interrupted by a gunman, who Steve identifies as "Codename Bravo", an operative he hasn't seen since 1944. Thus we get an arc in the present, interspersed with scenes of Steve and Peggy on a mission in 1944, where we learn why Codename Bravo hates Steve (they didn't get off on the right foot when Peggy ditched him for Steve, to begin with). Of course, it's 50/50 whether a Cap story will feature a World War II flashback plot tied to the present, so this isn't especially catering the film.

Our issue ends with CB in the present:

It's a good start, overall.  I've wondered how Steve McNiven would do on the title for years, and the results are very nice so far; glad to get him away from Mark Millar.

One of these days, Zemo's going to get his "fuck with Hawkeye" and "fuck with Captain America" plans mixed up and set one after the other.

This is just being The Continuity Geek, but someday they are going to say Dum-Dum Dugan got a weak dose of the Infinity Serum as well, if not as strong as the one Nick Fury got. He looks more like a guy in his 50s than his 70s or 80s.

I hope Bravo's deal isn't "Rogers stole Peggy from me!"

I thought they had, some years ago.

If I was Peggy I would have been trying to get Steve and Bravo here together like the bread of a Peggy-wich. Hubba Hubba.

So is Zemo back to being two dimensional evil again? That's a shame.

Yeah, I liked Zemo a lot in Thunderbolts. It's a shame that so few comic book characters are allowed to evolve and actually retain that evolved state.

Look at those persistent goggles he's always wearing.

Steve totally blinded him somehow, didn't he? Something is wrong with his eyes, regardless.

This is one moment I actually am happy that Nick called her a 'broad' because it shows that they were close enough, friends enough, to call each other insults with all that affection.

If McNiven and Brubaker want to work on this title until time itself ends...I'm okay with that. Just sayin'.

So American Dream is chopped liver, Sharon?
