Black-ish' night story from Batman Beyond..

At the last NYCC I found a .50 cent box with almost the whole run of Batman Beyond, I finally got around to reading it. I think its one of the better cartoon adaptations .



















Many felt this show/story had nowhere to go after "Return of the Joker", but I disagree. I think there was much more to say about Terry and Bruce.

Be he's also Hawkwoman's son right? That could explain why he's lighter than his dad...

Precisely - he is an interspecies mulatto, with his wings coming from his mother and his predominant skin color coming from his father - or, at least, so it is presented in the cartoon. He's basically a light-skinned black guy - he shouldn't be this pasty-lookin'.

Well, who thinks he would have been darker if his mother was Vixen. she has a darker skin tome but her features are VERY european.

It's possible - I'm at a bit of a disadvantage here, I'm afraid, since most of my knowledge of the show is second-hand. One of these days, I shall have MONEY! And then I shall be more in touch with these things, but for the moment, everything I know is gleaned from the Internet.

Well it seems a complaint some folks make about the character in general. The recent run in the Justics League of America and the JLU cartoon. I would say there is atleast something to it.

That she has European features, you mean? Isn't she of mixed parentage as well? I thought it was canon that her father was African and her mother was... well, undetermined, since we never saw her, but some variety of American, right? So maybe she was white, and Vixen got her features but her daddy's skin color - or perhaps she was a Creole from New Orleans. They used to really emphasize the European nature of their heritage, so if she came from that sort of a background, it's not surprising her daughter has European features.

Well, who knows? I was refering to Vixen as being "the first black super-heroine in the DCU" (and thats a debate in and of itself) and her being portrayed with non type traits. Then again some people have way too much free time.

Personally, I don't think it matters in the slightest - unless it's a plot point that a character is of mixed parentage, what earthly difference does it make?
It may have something to do with 'race paranoia', as it were. There seems to be a tendency among 'minorities' (I put that in quotes because a number of them are actually becoming majorities at this point) to get awfully picky about just how black/asian/chicano/whatever someone is. 'You're not really black - your grandmother was white', or 'you're no chicano - you don't speak Spanish', etc., etc. It's like these things are quantifiable elements, like hops in beer, and if you don't have the exact right amount in you, you don't qualify. I look forward to the point when none of these things will MATTER - I mean, talk about nitpicking.

Because of the freakiness of skin genetics, a lot of people born from, say, a white mother and a black father will have skin tones to either extreme. I've got a friend who's half white/half black, and he looks like the whitest guy you've ever seen (he's not albino.) Blame Mendelian inheritance.

Oh, absolutely, but I've seen screenshots from Batman Beyond and JLU that feature Warhawk, and he definitely tends more towards his father's side of things. He's nowhere near as dark-skinned as his dad, but he is, to say the least, extremely tan. He does not have the generic Caucasian coloration seen here.
