Mephisto, the Lord of Lies...or Love?

Here a few scans from New Mutants #30. Mephisto never misses a chance to get his swerve on.

Due to a translation error in spell-code, Sunspot, Cypher, Magma, X-Man and Warlock find themselves in Hell and in front of Mephisto's throne.







M continues his pitch while Doug tries to re-do the spell but no luck. Mephisto offers his help and takes an admiring glance at Amara. Bobby attacks him and Mephisto responds but Amara separates them with a lava alpha strike. Mephisto is impressed and makes an offer.





Ha. Now I'm picturing Mephisto staring at his cell and going, "Ok, now wait two days. Don't want to come off desperate."

I always get confused about if Marvel has an actual main Devil or not. Because you'd kind of assume Mephisto was it, but then there are other demons in the Marvel Universe that go by names like Satan and Lucifer and like whenever any of them show up they always go on about how they rule Hell or whatever, so I don't know. Doesn't really help that Marvel has multiple "Hell" places like Hell, Hel, Limbo, Hades, etc.

It was theorized (in Dr. Strange, I think) that Mephisto, Baal, Cthon, Satannish and the rest were are different aspects of the same being.

Are you sure Chthon was one of those, and not say Thog? Since he's an Elder God, and the devil-entities in MU have been said to have formed from the dissipated energies of Elder Gods when Atum/Demogorge destroyed most of them. Gods too, but I digress.

I don't know about Cthon, since he's an Elder god, but in the Chaos War, all of the aspects come together to form actual Satan. It seems each name is a different demon, Lucifer included, while Mephisto gets the title of the Devil.

IIRC Byrne had Mephisto be a sort of abstract embodiment of all human evil. Every evil thought, every lie we knowingly tell helps form him and give him power. Franklin Richards was able to dissipate him completely on one occasion, but it was reckoned that given the state of the world, he'd be back up to full strength very quickly.

Perhaps closer in concept to the Endless (He'd be... Deception? :) ) than standard demons.

Location wise, i think its pretty straight forward. Think of the whole dimension as just the Underworld. The Underworld is split into territories, like countries on Earth. Hel, Hell, and Hades are each different countries. I think Limbo is an entirely different dimension. And Hades/Pluto and Hela aren't demons, theyre gods of different beliefs that rule these. The pantheons coexist just like on earth,
