The "stretch my legs" bit was a little much, but I like it--I think Babs is probably more compelling where she is now than where she was in the past few years as Oracle, and I'm curious to see what this Mirror dude's angle is, as well as, you know, how she can walk now.
I don't know if its because we have only 4 pages here or if it's because we have had years to see Babs as Oracle, but this still seems so rushed. If I was a new reader, I would be thinking, "What? She was paralyzed? When was this? Did I miss something?"
I really liked this, right up to the end which was.... stupid.
And no, cop lady, a vigilante failing to take down an armed madman after he just pointed a gun at her is not "murder." I have an idea; how about you, the trained police officer, take him down with yourgun? Why didn't you like, shoot him in the leg or something? Oh, you were busy bleeding, were you? Well, Babs was busy being traumatised. So STFU.
I was unhappy about her being Batgirl again but I could live with it if only we weren't still reminded every damn page about her terrible nigh-fridging.
This seems like it could maybe have been a kind of good comic if, instead of Barbara Gordon being a big failure and then some evil douchebag nobody I don't care about kills someone right in front of her, she just like, y'know, doesn't fail, and instead, succeeds, saves a guy's life, and kicks the shit out of the evil douchebag nobody I don't care about.
It's too bad nobody felt like writing a good, enjoyable comic like that.
I was planning on waiting until next month to download the book but since it's Gail that plan quickly fell apart and I got it today instead.
I loved it. I knew I'd like it but I was pretty impressed by the whole thing. I thought it was a good mix of respect for what has come before and world building her future. I did get a pang when Babs mentioned how nice it would be to have a friend to drink tea with. (And that pang was named Dinah. *sigh*)
The ending with the crazy detective threw me off a little until I started wondering about the villain. I'm sure his gimmick goes far beyond, "I've got a makeup mirror on my chest." Considering how enthusiastic and over the top the first couple Babs was after their rescue, maybe the detective's response was meant to be the dark reflection of it? Maybe he was influencing her somehow?
...or maybe she's just ungrateful in the grand tradition of Spiderman and his "you didnt bleed nearly enough saving us" New Yorkers.
Surprised to see a younger looking Jim Gordon..with red hair and mustache instead of it being white or grey. Admittedly I do like that Babs is traumatized. Makes for a unique plot, but admittedly a guy doesn't want constant reminders of Oracle at the same time. Some answers would be much appreciated.
Yup, just what I feared. All of the amazing, complex, human, realistic, and nuanced character development either a) thrown out or b) compressed into a short 3 years (in which some of it will HAVE to be thrown out)
Also, and how is "...then she got better!" not insulting to differently abled readers, Gail? Too bad THEY can't miraculous "just get better", huh?

This is exactly how I feel about this switch. I am hoping when we get more details in the coming month it is a little more justifiable, but I am not holding my breath.
I will always..ALWAYS miss Stephanie in the batsuit. (I much preferred her in that over her spoiler, or god forbid, the horrible look they gave her as Robin..)
But, I can't deny that it was good to see Barbara swinging about, and kicking butt again. As I always loathed DC's use of her in the Killing Joke. (Even though, I like the rest of that story..) I've never understood why they did that. They could have just as easily had it be a wife/girlfriend of Gordons, if they were looking for the cheap tradgedy there. And thus not deprived themselves of one of their premier superheroines. I mean's IIRC it's not as if they even mention in the killing joke that she's batgirl. Thus many of the folk who've read it over the years, probably don't even realise that..
Ah but I digress. This was a nice start. And I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes. (But damn I will always miss Stephanie as Batgirl. Think I was actually crushing on her a little bit! LOL)
The thing is, DC was dumb enough to even adopt TKJ as an in-continuity story. That's massively awkward when reading the book, it comes across as more of a final Batman story, like Moore's own Superman story from the same period.
I mean, the treatment of Babs aside, how does Batman put that ending in any context other than him being treated like a nutjob by everyone when he's found laughing it up with Joker at the end? It just doesn't work. DC chained themselves to the rock that was Oracle, effectively, if they hadn't, we'd probably have had Babs as Batgirl through the 90's.
Um Miss Police Woman.. the murderer is right next to Babs. Please point your gun at the actual murderer. You know the one you just watched just commit the murder and you know has a gun? You know the same guy who killed your partner?
So if Babs was Oracle for only three years, does this still mean she formed the Birds of Prey during that time? Does she still know Dinah? Gah! So many questions going through my head right now. :<
On another note, I love that Babs keeps a poster of Batman on her door. :P
