Hal did not do anyhing wrong, actually she should be happy he wa asking her for help with a legit issue finachally. Niether of them are in no shape to get married, and her acting like that to a friend who has just had a galaxy load of shit dropped on them is mean.
Oh, asking her was no problem, in my book, but... the setup for the question was.... kind of misleading, and I don't blame her for that reaction one bit.
Have you dated high maintenance, strong willed women? I've had my share, and I can tell you from every night I got "it" wrong, and the way Hal is written here, he got it wrong.
For starters: You ask for a cosigner at a coffee house, not some fancy restaurant. If that doesn't work, you ask AFTER sex (and you are a great giver.)
I would say that... if not for that setup. Could he have made that sound ANY MORE like a proposal? I don't think he could.
That type of thing, you wait until dessert/coffee and start off with something more like "I really hate to ask you this, and I understand if you turn me down, but I really need help," etc. You're asking for help, not asking to go steady. And either way, if you ask at the end of the evening, you don't ruin the entire date.
With me I like the younger gen thaat began picking up the mantle in the late 80s-90s: Wally West did a stellar job and I believe there is room for two flashes, Dick Grayson has also done an amazing job, Donna Troy is great, Cyborg is doing awesome right now and his charachter has come a long way, Say what you will about Roy now but he was a damn fine superhero before dc deciced to fuck him, Connor Hawke needs to come out of whatever hole he is stuck in because the kid was freaking awesome but now its like he does not exist(he probably doesnt in nDC), and kyle rayner...well kyle rayner I just dont like him screw him(ironically we still see him every month so fans must love him).
But I still tend to gravitate more to the old guard in most cases Barry's personality even in the silverage captivated me more then Wally ever has, Donna Troy never carried as much weight to me as wonder women, and Hal does not even have to try to be better then kyle in my book. Connor Hawke and Ollie are about equal to me, while Batman and nightwing have gone in their own so much I have trouble comparing them. But this is just my opion, I like seeing that the old hereos can tack on modern issues. I dont see it as them being defiled, but being given the chance to show they are still relevant.
As to the setup, asking somebody for financial help isn't easy.
As to Carol's reaction, isn't she just divorced? Isn't Hal dating somebody else? (Cowgirl got a mention at the beginning of Brightest Day, which is still in continuity, right?) Isn't he in the middle of a major emotional adjustment? What about this scenario suggests that marriage is at all a good idea right now?
The real problem here is the writer, though. We get if, Mr. Johns. Hal won't ask Carol to marry him. You've brought it up again and again in just about every single goddamned story since 2004. Find a new line already.
I'm actually tired of Carol. To me she was never the Hal's female soulmate ala Lois/Iris/Linda/Shiera/Inza/Dian Belmont/Joan Garrick or even Black Canary (for Ollie). Hal dated a LOT of women other than Carol during many different runs. One could argue he was closer to Black Canary (platonically) than he was to Carol and Ollie is probably the closest thing he has to a soulmate.
I actually liked him with Cowgirl because it was different. It showed he had moved on, he had been raised from the dead and de-aged and he was going to change the way he did things and how dated/dealt with women. Then Johns got fixated on Carol again and Cowgirl disappeared. Even though it was Johns himself who had Hal point out to Carol that she married VERY QUICKLY after he died (so she didn't mourn very long), and kept pleading her love for her husband (ironically named Gil Johns who was physically the opposite of Hal) over and over again (while he was Spectre) until the moment Hal became GL/alive again when all of a sudden Carol got divorced (with Tom saying he had never seen her "happier" post-divorce), became jealous of Cowgirl (even though Hal wasn't even with Carol BEFORE he died) and became a Star Sapphire again just because of her great "love" for Hal (and I guess we were supposed to view him negatively because he didn't return it?).
I think a part of Geoff Johns wants Carol to be part of a super couple with Hal (like other DC couples) but because he IS a such a huge Hal fan inside he knows that it doesn't fit either character. That's why the writing is all over the place regarding the two.
I almost never read DC, but I don't get Green Lanterns at all. What they can do with their powers is literally only bounded by their imagination, right? So why have I never seen anything truly creative out of the GLs?

Well, at this time, Hal doesn't have the ring. But usually you don't see much creativity from them because . . . the guardians don't recruit based on imagination and creativity. They recruit based on honesty and fearlessness.
And then you have Kyle Rayner, who was a creative artist. His constructs were the most imaginative, and once they latched onto that, Kyle's popularity boomed.
It's too bad that General Stone (who knew Hal was GL) couldn't come up with a cover story to keep Hal in the Air Force, at least. At least then he'd have housing and a job.
I love how Barry was remembered as a "Saint" for his actions in the 1st Crisis, but everything the DC heads have done since dragging him back has basically ruined his Silver Sterling reputation.
It's not the misunderstanding that has me siding with Carol, so much as it seems like Hal was trying to charm her into helping him out, what with all the fancy dinner and stuff. He could have just as well asked her in a million other settings. Asking for money isn't easy, but trying to charm a woman with whom you've fought side-bye-side to save the world for this reason is pretty disrespectful.

Date: 2011-09-16 02:48 am (UTC)They (1) Bring back the idealized, silver-age heroes.
Then (2) pile on unlikeable traits (either dialing up old ones or even adding in new-ones) heavily.
Leaving them far less idealized than the 80s-90s-00s heroes they're there to replace.
Honestly I don't get it.
