[personal profile] runespoor posting in [community profile] scans_daily
Because the subject of Roy hitting on people or being bros with them reminded me of this.

Two and a half pages from Arsenal v1 #2, the '98 mini-series.

If it's been posted before, all my apologies.

Well, Roy, I think it's more than just Oracle who has a crush on Nightwing. ;)

Weird-faced Roy is weird faced. You might want to add a "creator: rick mays" tag for the artwork.

I did like that he suggests two guys and two gals as possible people Oracle has the hots for, but isn't sure of which, or even which gender Oracle IS.

And then Babs set up Ted Kord and a confused Roy for a date.

Roy: *looking at Ted* <,< >.> Umm, are you...Oracle?
Ted: Wait, what? Am I...Oh I'm going to kill her.

Roy: You thought I...? Really? Honestly, with me and Nightwing it was that one time... well, three times actually... four times and a threesome if I'm honest, but that doesn't mean I usually... y'know DO IT with guys on a regular basis... I like girls, really I do!. Oh sorry, five times and two threesomes, and one of those was boy girl boy.

Embarassed pause

Sigh... okay... SEVEN with Nightwing if we count his time as Robin, two threesomes and one that we're not entirely sure how many were involved at any given time, but we did find out that Gar had spiked the avocado dip that night and when one of your teammates is a teleporter and another is a shapeshifter it's very hard to pin things down THAT exactly.

Ted: TOO MUCH INFORMATION!!!

Thank you, and I forgot to have Roy shouting in desperation - "They said it doesn't count if the other guy is a Robin" or maybe "It doesn't count if it's Dick!"

You're separating appearances into 'transsexual' and 'not transexual'. that's making a judgement.

Nope, no one's ever gotten called out for noting that a particular artist made Cass Cain look Caucasian, for example.

I'm transsexual friendly too: but I don't understand your comment. How is this a judgement? And are all judgements bad? For example, my judgement is that transsexuals amazing and brave and put up with a lot of discrimination, yet don't stop being and expressing themselves. Is that bad?

Perhaps this mod note was uncalled for?

I don't even think it is a judgement either.

If I said an artist drew the character or colored a character wrong, for example: "Wow Kyle was mis-colored he looks black here." Nobody would jump and think the persons saying he looks black and black is bad or somesuch.

I mean the comment above is criticizing the art not transsexuals.

Okay, explain this, what does 'a transsexual' look like? What does saying 'so-and-so looks like a transexual' even mean beyond saying they don't look like your expectation for someone of their perceived gender? It's a really gross thing to say, point blank.

That said, before anyone goes 'but they said the art, not a real person' or something of that nature, if he wants to criticize the art, why not make specific points rather than stating something vague, meaningless, and offensive that implies trans people look a certain way or at least look so different from cis folks that he can totally tell!(and no, saying the art made the person not look their race is an entirely different matter and in fact a very exact criticism, especially when it's whitewashing a COC).

Ok, explain to me it's gross to voice an observation that it's Roy doesn't look like himself?

Roy looks like he could be male or female{to me} in this art.

"before anyone goes 'but they said the art, not a real person' or something of that nature, if he wants to criticize the art, why not make specific points rather than stating something vague, meaningless, and offensive"

Dismal aside, he *did specifically criticize the art*: and your assertion that the criticism is 'vague', 'meaningless', and 'offensive' is not at all objectively true: it's just your opinion. It is, as a matter of fact, the entire point of this discussion.

We're trying to establish whether it is, in fact, offensive. You can't use a a priori assertion to prove the point under contention, then use that as the premise for the a priori assertion: that's simply not reasonable.

"saying the art made the person not look their race is an entirely different matter and in fact a very exact criticism"

Again, I'd like to hear your reasoning for making this distinction. To me, to sounds baseless. We're talking about how people are perceived in both cases, based on social and group identity criteria. Why this artificial distinction? I'm not following?

I can see it too. In some scans (such as the hand on hip pose, and the leaning on stairs pose) it looks like the character is either female or posed in a more traditional feminine way, yet we also see the character with stubble. This looks like someone who is male bodied, but not cis gendered.

And yes, many trans folks are identifiable visibly (some can pass completely, but not all can, especially ones who haven't started taking hormones and such or ones that simply have a bone structure that makes it difficult). Not all in the exact same ways of course. But in many ways Roy here reminds me of a good friend of mine, who is indeed MtF.

Taking "[he} look like a transsexual" and assuming it's an insult is turning transexuality itself into an insult, and to my eyes at least that's extremely problematic.

I don't think the mod note was uncalled for. How often do you really hear 's/he looks like a transsexual' used as a compliment? It's typically a put down based on the assumption that transsexuals look a certain way. Even if the comment wasn't intended to insult transsexual individuals it was still a thoughtless and insensitive thing to say, and frankly I'm a little perturbed by the number of people willing to treat it as an innocuous comment.

In this community? quite a bit. That's one of the things I like about being here.

"I'm a little perturbed by the number of people willing to treat it as an innocuous comment."

I'm sorry you feel that way: I mean that sincerely. But it is an innocuous comment. It's not saying the Connor Hawke sometimes is drawn as asian, and sometimes not. That's not a slight either.

This Arsenal series is one of my absolute favorites. And seriously I don't see how I didn't notice this before but does Babs have a bit of a crush on Roy? Seriously she seemed a bit..gleeful upon hearing it was him and was initially the flirty one of the two where usually I'd have expected Roy to be.

Perhaps Roy isn't being quite as flirty as normal as he's not quite sure what gender Oracle is. And I imagine her reaction is based partly on what she knows about him directly, and what Dick has probably told her about him over the years. She's now experiencing the Speedy "charm" (well meaning perhaps, but gauche and occasionally VERY clumsy and approaching semi-desperate) directly, and finds it adorable, or at least quaintly amusing.
