Occupy Wall Street + NYCC '11 = ?

Will the "Occupy Wall Street" crowd attempt to recruit the New York Comic Con crowd next week? Or vice versa? What happens when angst-ridden hipsters encounter angst-ridden cosplayers? One group smells like patchouli and the other, uh, doesn't. (NOTE: "Occupy Wall Street" corrected from "Occupy New York." Oops)

it's actually occupy wall street, a movement by regular americans to protest the big spending and ...eccentricities of corporate america, to put it nicely. it's been going on for a while over here in nyc and has recently picked up steam in the american news media, so it's a pretty big deal.

(I am a New Yorker and I have heard a bit about it, just not by that name I suppose) Guess I haven't been paying enough attention (school's a fun distractor like that).

The corporate media is in full swing on this, depicting the protesters as kooks and aging hippies or clueless college kids. Funny how a country that pretty much started with protest street theater (the Boston Tea Party) and progressed to war to throw off their oppressors is so uncomfortable with protest now.

New York CIty is so big that the two groups will never see each other. It's amazing, because it's a really big convention. But NYC is so big and busy that NYCC isn't even a blip. Hidden over in the Javits Center, it knows nothing of the City and the City knows nothing of it.

A couple of the more aware creators and fans will go down and take a look at OWS. There will be a few scruffy folks that show up this year because they could use OWS to get out of a hotel bill. That's it.

They are looking to get their message across to corporate and business's, they staying the hell away from places like "Hell's Kitchen" where the Javits is around.
