Doom is back in Latveria (also, the dead Watcher from the previews is an Uatu from another dimension).

Later his master the Marquis of Death, with his new apprentice, arrives.

I object to the whole concept of the "master of Doom"

So, one minute it's "Yes, Master", the next it's "How dare you talk to me like that!" Sigh

Doom calling ANYONE "Master", will NEVER be right.

There are two constants in the Marvel 616 Universe. Steve Rogers, and Doom bows to NO ONE.
"Masters" my tuckus.

I don't think so. That's some poor schlub that Doom has stuck in his remote-controlled armour and trotted out to get fried by the Master. A random theory that I think the art might actually back up. The eyes, the body language.

Is it just me or does it look like the 'Master's' new apprentice is holding an invisible sword in the second panel of the first full page? Is that a plot point or does the guy just like to stand funny?

Also, all will be forgiven if this is revealed to be a clever ruse on Doom's part.

So.... Doom's master is the chattering cenobite?

I call lame. Ignoring the fact that trying to make an emperor Palpatine like character for Doom is the stupidest thing ever conceived, if you are gonna try it, you should at least start with a design that doesn't look like it fell out of Clive Barkers ass.

Man, even the cover design sucks. Whatever happened to the bombastic fonts of yester-Marvel?

From: [identity profile] jlroberson.insanejournal.com
I kind of like the cover designs on their run, but yeah, I see your point.

That being said, I've been amazingly disappointed at how dull this run has been, and that it's really only--so far--been a way of introducing YET ANOTHER future-Marvel thing. Not that either creator lacks skill. It's just they're not showing any more than technical skill anymore. I don't see Millar as having any kind of strong overall concept here.

Any villain who calls themself evil seems kind of childish or they're trying to make a point.

With the Brotherhood of Evil, they're trying to make a philosophical point. The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants kind of ended up with the name due to Marvel adapting elements of the Doom Patrol series into their universe, resulting in people who saw themselves as good but called themselves evil so children would know who too book when they showed up.

Doom isn't really the kind of character to go "Look how evil I am! Mwhahaha!" in order to make a point, thus him identifying himself as a villain seems kind of childish as he seems to be the sort of guy who makes out people like Reed Richards to be the actual supervillains.

Someone who revelled in their evilness wouldn't necessarily be someone to create good diplomatic relations, even friendships, with superheroes like Black Panther and Namor... *remembers recent characterisation* Shoot.

To be fair, the 'Marquis of Death' (Stupid, stupid name.) has a point.
For someone who claims to be so great, Doom has been little more than a chrome punching bag for anyone in marvel who wears tights.

When this stuff was first in previews, and people were all up in arms about it, I didn't really care (or pay attention). I've never thought much of Doom either way -- he's just another Universe-wide threat with flimsy motives, a lot of big talk, and a lousy track record. I didn't get all the "I heart Doom! He's so polite!" talk.

But this is bad like I wouldn't have believed. They need to undo all this instantly.

I just hope people will stop complaining about "Unthinkable" after this storyline. Because while I can accept Doom betraying the love of his life, turning his back on science and bargaining with demonic forces for the supernatural power he needs to kick Reed's ass...

...The idea of Doom KNEELING before somone, BY CHOICE is what is truely "Unthinkable" to me.

The true sign of a badass arch villain: Takes 20 years to realize that his minion sucks and when finally disposing of the inept servant, he feels obliged to adopt his minion's feuds and settle his old scores.

I guess it must some weird sentimental attachment thing, or the villain equivalent of paying severance.

Millar's thought process, once again:

Real villains should win, not lose, because villains are always more Kewl than heroes.
Ignore, eliminate, or deconstruct any conventions of the genre that prevent this from happening.

Although, give it some thought and you see that it's a critique of some of the more popular tropes of comic book villainery - namely, that villains get all that respect and awe despite never really winning any of their battles against the heroes. Sure, Doom is a benign ruler of a prosperous Kingdom and has used magic and manipulated Gods, etc. - but he's still unable, through various faults, to crush and annihilate his arch-enemies, no matter how many chances he's given.

This Marquis of Death character is very much a tongue-in-cheek parody of 'absolute villainery' - taking the time to destroy everything, including the kitchen sink - and it's most likely that he will be defeated and/or destroyed via a strikeback by some sort of absolute heroism, e.g. Ben Grimm.
