Date: 2009-05-21 06:13 pm (UTC)I call lame. Ignoring the fact that trying to make an emperor Palpatine like character for Doom is the stupidest thing ever conceived, if you are gonna try it, you should at least start with a design that doesn't look like it fell out of Clive Barkers ass.

Date: 2009-05-21 08:47 pm (UTC)That being said, I've been amazingly disappointed at how dull this run has been, and that it's really only--so far--been a way of introducing YET ANOTHER future-Marvel thing. Not that either creator lacks skill. It's just they're not showing any more than technical skill anymore. I don't see Millar as having any kind of strong overall concept here.

Date: 2009-05-21 06:46 pm (UTC)With the Brotherhood of Evil, they're trying to make a philosophical point. The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants kind of ended up with the name due to Marvel adapting elements of the Doom Patrol series into their universe, resulting in people who saw themselves as good but called themselves evil so children would know who too book when they showed up.
Doom isn't really the kind of character to go "Look how evil I am! Mwhahaha!" in order to make a point, thus him identifying himself as a villain seems kind of childish as he seems to be the sort of guy who makes out people like Reed Richards to be the actual supervillains.
Someone who revelled in their evilness wouldn't necessarily be someone to create good diplomatic relations, even friendships, with superheroes like Black Panther and Namor... *remembers recent characterisation* Shoot.

Ignore, eliminate, or deconstruct any conventions of the genre that prevent this from happening.

Date: 2009-05-22 08:56 am (UTC)This Marquis of Death character is very much a tongue-in-cheek parody of 'absolute villainery' - taking the time to destroy everything, including the kitchen sink - and it's most likely that he will be defeated and/or destroyed via a strikeback by some sort of absolute heroism, e.g. Ben Grimm.
