The Parliament of Limbs didn't seem to think so--but considering that humans are part of the Red and they do basically rule things, they could be a bit complacent...
I was kind of hoping the Parliament of Limbs would say the same thing in this week's Animal Man, that would have been a nice bit of irony considering how much the books play off of each other.
I liked the Rot's description a little better with "the third element in the balance..." until "...between life and death."
I'm starting to read it more as the Parliaments (and The Rot itself) thinking they must be the only element in play, period. That the natural cycle of birth, growth, decay, rebirth isn't natural to their side, otherwise the writers just don't really get basic biology.
Not really methinks, it's part of a much larger cycle of nature of which both life and death are a part, but dead is not part of life, it's what happens AFTER life. If it were a part of it, there would be a representative of it along with the Green and the Red.
A book that's missing it's ending isn't quite as good, IMO. Death is PART of the Green and the Red. It's an aspect I'm pretty sure Alan Moore's run dealt with.
It is unlife, the Great Sickness, the corruption of all that doth draw breath in any way, shape, or form. It is The Rot, and it is coming for you. For us all.
Interesting. One would think the Rot as sickness would simply be a balancer for life/overpopulation IE balancer of life and death. Maybe the green and red see it as purely evil since they don't realize every time they grow too large and powerful they must be balanced?
