I'm slightly ashamed I never heard about this before now. Only a year or so ago we lost one of the two creators of Static, Dwayne McDuffie
And now we've lost the other....
Back on June 7th it was confirmed that Robert L Washington III had passed away after a series of heart attacks.
Now friends of the creator are requesting donations to the Hero Alliance to allow them to pay for a decent funeral, as Mr Washington was basically destitute when he died.
Donations can be made via The Hero Initiative's website (Be sure to enter "Robert Washington" in the "Add special instructions to seller" field to ensure that your money will go toward Washington's funeral). Washington's stories will be remembered by fans -- Go and seek out back issues of his Static and Shadow Cabinet runs, which remain as smart and funny now as they were almost 20 years ago, for proof -- and this action can help those same readers remember the man behind them.
The legality scan is a deeply sad one, a piece that Mr Washington wrote for the Hero Alliance Annual anthology I believe last year, detailing how important the work of the HA is to creators who have fallen on hard times. It's a salutary reminder that it's not just for those who are too old to support themselves. but for those in need. Imagine the courage it must have taken to compose this, to SUBMIT this, to expose your own vulnerability to THIS extent.
