Batman: Death by Design

I thought that since no one seems to have talked much about this book, I'd post a little of it.

The story seems to be a return to the BTAS era of Artdeco Batman, and involves a series of mysterious disasters around the city that seem to be connected to a building (commissioned by Bruce's dad but in serious disrepair) that Bruce wants to demolish.

Definately one of the prettier Batman stories in recent years too.







I'll post more when the book's been out a month, as I believe that all new comics, regardless of format, you can only post four pages from, no?

Well the artist, Dave Taylor, primarily works on stuff for 2000AD, so that's technically true.

I had a flick through this in the local WHSmiths up in town; Really enjoyed the visual style, which is something very noir-y that none of the Bat-Books are particularly delivering right now, but after reading some of Kidd's novels, I think I'm going to wait until it's reduced.

The plot is actually pretty more Noirish than most recent Batman books. I mean, although the Joker and a costumed vigilante-type other than Batman appear, the plot is really more akin to a more straight Noir story like LA Confidential, LA Noire etc. etc.

Wow, from spring-loaded straight to micro-engine? Not even a moment's glance at pressure cartridges, Bruce? :)

And yes, this is some gorgeous stuff. But reading that short story blurb, my writer sense is tingling, telling me that after a lot of back-and-forth angsting, Bruce suddenly remembers he's filthy fucking rich and renovates/rebuilds the entire damn block. 'Cuz he's BATMAN.

Ehhh... kind of, but it's a bit more complicated than that. Such as the explantion as to why the building is such a mess in the first place and how the conspiracy is carrying over to the new construction project Bruce is funding.

I don't know... I really like the art style, especially for the buildings, but Batman himself just kind of looks... cuddly.

Such a comfortable-sounding onomatopeia.

More the sound of someone throwing themselves down onto a plump fireside armchair than the noise of a grappling hook discharging, imo.

Really loving the Classic 1940s Batman feel. Very noirish. The one thing that's been missing from the Bat-books.
