Rie later visits Yuuko in her home to see that she is in bed wearing a mask. Yuuko tells her to go away. Later...








Her parents try everything including putting salt in her mouth but nothing works. Yuuko grows weaker as she is unable to eat. Eventually her parents fill the tub with salt and bring Yuuko into it.

Witness, for example, the slasher movie. Usually the victims go someplace that they know is haunted or cursed, they do something dumb, and they're killed for it. The person or persons to survive the movie do so by being smarter or more overtly virtuous than the rest.

There are also dozens of movies where the protagonist and eventual survivor is indicated early on by the fact that he or probably she is insisting upon the threat's existence and attempting to research its cause at a point when most of the other characters are either unaware or unwilling to admit that the threat even exists. Most of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies are like this, for example, especially when Nancy is involved.

Note that even on that trope page, most of the film examples are not actually slasher movies. In most of the guy-with-a-knife films I've ever seen, the people who make it to the final confrontation are the ones who realize early on that the problem exists and take steps to confront it.
