Sorry for the triple post, but I just had to post this.

So Deathstroke #0 is basically Slade's new origin. The narrator is Adeline Wilson.

The whole issue is crap, but since I can only post four pages I'm going to focus on the stuff that pissed me off the most.

For starters, all this stuff basically contradicts all the stuff that Kyle Higgins did with Deathstroke's family. While I wasn't crazy about Higgins' run, it shows what a mess the New 52's continuity is.

The story begins with Liefeld basically retelling Deathstroke's origin from The Judas Contract. There's some crap about Slade being a member of the Team 7 group, but in Liefeld's defense that was something DC made him do and was one of the reasons why he quit.

So Slade gets married to Addie, they have kids, he becomes a mercenary, you know the drill.




So that's how Deathstroke lost his eye in The New 52. Instead of Adeline shooting him because he let Joey's throat get slit, it's some nameless mook.

Adeline says how Deathstroke and Grant took on the criminal underworld until Grant was killed, though we don't actually see him die.

In the present, Slade recieves a Hawaiian orchid, which was Adeline's favorite flower; someone is trying to send him a message.

Yeah, Slade got his powers from the army before Grant was born, so he just inherited them.

Does Liefeld actually KNOW what a gun looks like? They're not a SOLID FUCKING BLOCK, ROB. THEY HAVE MOVING PARTS AND TEXTURES AND STUFF.

I also like the 'losing an eye' page, which looks more like a rather severe incident with a bottle of Heinz.

Minor point- it was Jericho's walls that came tumbling down. Unless they're trying to Pay it Forward through their wrath, that metaphor doesn't make a lot of sense.

Well that sucks. I do kind of like seeing Adeline kick ass, but it's not worth it to remove the original eye-loss story. Now instead of being a well done thing that carries weight and shows the personal cost of Deathstroke being an evil mercenary it's just a manly war wound that he got while manfully avenging his manly son in a manly fashion. I know a lot of people hated when Deathstroke was a ridiculously overpowered villain, an era that I fortunately did not suffer through, but I really think that DC is going too far with the anti-hero characterization.

The important thing is, we are quickly running out of comic books that Rob Liefeld has any involvement in. At least ones that anyone's likely to give a shit about.

That's the trouble. Deathstroke, Grifter and Hawkman ALL could have been promising titles had DC opted to put a decent creative team on them. Deathstroke in particular is one of those ones crying out for either a proficient action writer and artist, or someone who really gets anti-heroes. Grifter was put to great use in Joe Casey's work on Wildcats, which is so recent in memory that his shitty book at the moment stings like Hell.

So it's the presence of Liefeld on those books that just makes me sad, along with the pretty pathetic usage of what could be great characters like Lobo, Zealot and others.

You say retell, I say outright stole. Seriously, almost all the panels of the first three pages are direct art and dialogue rips from that issue of the Judas Contract. After flipping through my copy of Judas Contract, I noticed the scan of Adeline firing the machine gun is also a direct art/dialogue rip-off.
