While it was fun to see the Aang gang back together and in fine form, it ended a little slow, and we didn't see the start of the world Korra lives in like I thought we would. But the peace was established, and we got the idea of... well, I won't spoil that...

but all of this labor came at a price.

SPOILERS BEHIND THE CUT.

*note to mods: Not my scans...

It wasn't Firelord Ozai that "went away" at the end of the story, but someone else....

Yep, that JUST HAPPENED. And it WAS Roku who had wanted to keep the nations separate (when alive), and Roku was willing to kill the Firelord in order to maintane "the balance" (at the time, he was right, as the Fire Nation was expanding their empire).

Aang now sees a different path. Like he was taught in The Swamp, the idea of separate nations is an illusion... but it will take time and effort to have separate cultures blend into one community. The idea of separate nations is starting to slip away.

And to wash out that bad taste in your mouth.
BOBA!!!! Uncle Iroh STYLE!!!!

What bad taste? This was a very meaningful, poignant scene - one of best in the book. I only get "bad tastes" when the scene is bad, not when it's sad.

Really, I thought that the third issue was far and away the best part of the mini-series, as we really focused on the conflict between the Fire Nation, the Earth Kingdom, and the colony, where everyone wants to do the right thing, but no one is quite sure what that is. It's certainly better then the second issue, which was almost entirely taken up by shenanigans. Fun shenanigans, yes, but still just shenanigans.

I felt the third was really strong too.

They were all pretty good in my book...

Oh, don't get me wrong, I liked all three as well - the second issue especially had lines that made me laugh out loud ("Something important did happen - in my brain!")

It's just that I liked the third issue the most, as it was almost entirely focused on the conflict that had been introduced in the very first issue, and managed to have a very good, satisfying resolution while teasing future events.

Ah, Roku. Honestly you aren't my go-to Avatar on strategic decisions.

Sure, Aang did not act decisively to separate the nations... but nor is he hesitating, he intends to build something new.

We all know when Aang becomes a spirit he will provide Much better advice.

Aang has ignored advice from his predecessors before, so I saw this as a growing-up moment and choosing to listen to himself, not goodbye to Roku forever. Especially as we see Roku behind Aang's spirit in the Korra finale.

It'd be a real dick move if Aang cut off not only himself but all of his future reincarnations from Roku forever

Roku: Peace can only be achieved through throughly segregating the nations of the world!
Aang: The world uniting in peaceful co-existance and merging into one equal nation is different from one nation trying to take over the world to establish it's own dominance, Roku. You can't compare Zuko to Sozin or his father.
Roku: Sure I can, and you have to fulfill your promise and murder him, otherwise you'll start a world government that'll put floride in the drinking water and control people's brains!
Aang: ...What?
