Welll It's a little dickish, but still a pretty good sequence and I liked seeing Cyclops thinking so tactically, The one thing that sticks out to me is how swiftly this moves along, I know these X-Men stories get mocked sometimes the pages being crammed with wordswordswordswords, but it really lets the story move through this kind of stuff efficiently. I respect that.
it's funny reading the old, old X-men, where Scott's "power beam" was almost the deus ex machina of any issue where Xavier didn't shut down the baddies with his psychic powers.
Scott *was* the most powerful of the O5. Jean and Bobby passed him eventually, but Whedon got that part wrong in Astonishing.
Remember back when there were only, like, 14 X-Men in the Marvel Universe. And they got along? And the roster of past and present members didn't list into 80+? And... and... and...
This was from either X-Men #127 or #128 (I'd have to go look at my collection to verify), which was 1979.
The X-men got along as well as any family in the MU, including the FF. At first, the 'all new, all different' team were very contentious (by design), but within a couple of years, they had started to genuinely become an extended family. Notice here how quickly they get over their anger and get on with the task at hand. In a little over a year, they would stand against an entire empire (and likely certain death) for each other at the culmination of the Dark Phoenix saga...out of nothing more than loyalty and love.
The X-men used to get along just fine, even if they were the most angsty of the superhero set.
I am normally the #1 guy for hating how Wolverine is god-modded by fanboy writers - he's most interesting to me when he's a low-level guy with a fierce will and smarter than he acts - I don't think Wolverine is meant to be capable of coming close to beating, say, Spider-man in a fight - but I object to this sequence. Punching Wolverine in the face would get Scott a broken hand.
Bones don't yield that much in a normal person--bare-knuckle boxing will mess up almost anyone's hands. (And I'm assuming that Cyke's gloves aren't padded in any way.) If he hit him in the nose, though, that wouldn't be a factor. The real problem is that he's knocking Wolverine back with a backhand; even with a strong person, that's not real likely.
I want to say that at this point the fact that Wolverine had an adamantium skeleton hadn't been established yet...I think. But still, one of the things that's always struck me as amusing about superhero comics is how they're constantly punching one another in the head and never getting hand injuries.
I think that makes the moment more awesome for Scott, though. He was deliberately holding back at least to not seriously injure them. They were going for the kill. He still kicked their ass. Like Logan said in Astonishing, there's a reason Scott's the guy in charge.
Or, the guy who was in charge, before they did what they could to ruin that.
I miss the days when Wolverine and Nightcrawler were, to borrow Cyclops' phrase, "psycho playmates," lol. And man, that was like a gallon of hot chocolate Cyke threw in Wolvie's face. Side note: why weren't superheros ever allowed to drink coffee in older comics? Were they trying to protect impressionable young people from the dangers of caffeine...? By promoting sugar...? It's always confused me.
