However, I don't really see how having Peter's memories would allow him to turn off his arrogance and turn on the (quite uncharacteristic) charm.
Unless, of course, this is just a shadow of Otto projected over the real Peter that will just fade over time, taking us back to the status quo (plus one more barrier between Pete and MJ)...
Hate to tell you, Hank, but the moustache just isn't working for me. Time to get the hedge trimmer out and do some magic.
As to the actual stuff, shouldn't Rachel be perfectly capable of checking Otto's surface thoughts without endangering his secret identity? Heck, I think some of the X-teeps have actually done so before this.
Urgh, see this is exactly what I was dreading with this status quo. Logically, Otto's disguise shouldn't be able to hold up for long without everyone around him having to be a total sucker. The same thing comes up in the latest issue of Daredevil too, even just reading the previews, Daredevil's first thought on seeing Spidey acting weird is that it's mind control. It annoys me so, so much. In the long run either everyone is going to just have to be a massive idiot, or they're going to have to not get suspicious, which would just be sad, given how much shit Spidey's taken over the years, for his hard earned friends and allies not to notice that he's being used as a meat puppet by a murderer. I find it immensely vexing and it really ruins my enjoyment of what looks like a reasonably fun book. I really think they'd have been better off going with the reverse situation and having Peter in his own body, but struggling with Ock residual memories, but what do I know.
Um, as to the actual story, this looks neat. I mean, again, I just can't get aboard with this status quo, but it looks decently written. But what's up with Spider-Man's mask? Does it have a little nose hook now? Looks weird as heck.
This is starting to remind me of that horrible Avengers storyline with Carol Danvers where the rest of the Avengers were hunky-dory with her going off with the guy who basically and impregnated her - with HIMSELF! It's obvious something was "off" but to make the story work everyone else had to act like an idiot. How long does Marvel think they can stretch this ridiculousness?
On the plus side I like it when people like Wolverine and Ock!Spidey's thoughts are a good mirror to what I've always thought - that deep down Peter thinks Logan is a jerk. I mean didn't he also hit on MJ when he though Peter was out of the way (that's still canon, right?)
Okay not bad but I have to wonder, what is with the little bird-like nose on Spider-Man's mask? Are they trying to emulate the Talon costume of the Owl Court over in DC?
i just had a thought.... peter is Dead... shouldnt that null and void his deal with mephisto?
shouldnt he also become aware of the deal now that he is dead? i mean i am sure that either way it should be one of the things weighed against/for him,,,,
Huh, Rachel changed up her costume. Deliabrate choice of the artist or refusal to look up what the death coat/bodysuit actually look like.
This got me totally on Otto's side. If the book became 22 pages of him beating up Wolverine every two weeks, I would buy double copies bi-monthly.
Yeah, when the X-Men get possessed they start doing awful things. Remeber all the "stopping world hunger" stuff they were doing? Those monsters. (Cannot wait for enough time to pass so that people will stop referencing that stupid event.)
Being from the future (or really, *A* future) Rachel knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Or at least she did before whatever the heck happened in One Moment in Time happened.
Not necessarily. It's entirely possible that Spider-Man's true identity was never made public knowledge, so Rachel wouldn't know. Unless it was stated in some other story that she does?
I am reminded of something my lady friend told me some years back (paraphrased): "This new story has Hermione Granger running a whorehouse. Why do I EVER worry about my stuff being slightly OOC?"
Not quite sure it applies, except that... well, I wish most of the Marvel and DC universes weren't OOC these days. Sigh.
As much as I don't care for this storyline, I do rather enjoy those moments when folks get a little reminder that the "nice guy" who is Spider-Man (at least nice to his friends when written mildly well) can probably KICK YOUR ASS.
Come to think of it, didn't Spider-Man beat the holy hell out of Wolverine in their first meeting/team-up? Though admittedly that would've been back in the Claremont "Healing Factor doesn't mean he can't get his butt severely kicked" Wolverine days.
Yeah, I'm a little curious as to why they didn't have Otto have an anti-telepathy thing in the suit to begin with. Rachel should've picked up on it by the surface thoughts alone. Plus, she should've been already in his brain before he could even start with "the charm."
Surprise, surprise, a more capable writer than Dan Slott (read: ANYONE ELSE BESIDES HIM) is better at writing the dialogue for Freaky Friday-Man so that it reads somewhat like something that Spider-Man would actually say.
Doesn't make me utterly despise the pointlessness of this huge freaking stunt of a 'story' any less. Nor those ugly metal goggles. I suppose whoever came up with them didn't account for the fact that their "expressiveness" would only work when they've got a light-source to reflect. Get used to never seeing Freaky Friday-Man at night or in an area with mood lighting...
Welp, so much for Ock pacifying people's suspicions by using Peter's intimate memories to assuage them. It's just "I saved the city, didn't I?!" + "I'm going to fuckin' sue you if you violate my privacy!"
"Welp, so much for Ock pacifying people's suspicions by using Peter's intimate memories to assuage them."
The thing is, he sort of did that. He's making characteristically Spidey jokes ("badger sense", "you can't tell me you never thought about it"), which he presumably wouldn't be able to do without Peter's memories.
Wolvie's had that coming since forever. Just a shame it took a mind controlled Spidey to put him in his place. Also I'm not feeling that beak on his mask, stop it! Also have a feeling this fiasco will culminate in another event where it takes all the heroes to subdue Spidey and purge Otto from his mind and everyone's friends again blah?
Well, this is a hell of a lot better-written than what Slott did in SSM.
We have characters actually suspicious enough about Spidey's strange behaviour that they want to check to make sure it's really him. We also have Ock actually trying to talk like Peter would, and not doing a terrible job of it, which is something he didn't even bother with going by the scans of SSM #1.
This doesn't mean I've warmed up to the body-switching idea, but kudos to Chris Yost for doing a good job with what he was given to work with.
