Another Marvel Event?

Marvel teased another event today even though the first issue of "Age of Ultron" isn't out yet.

Billed as the "grandest Marvel Comics event of all time," this teaser reveals the contents of Marvel's Free Comic Book Day issue for 2013.



This couldn't possibly have anything to do with that little movie that grossed over a billion dollars, could it?

Didn't they already do this years ago? Thanos is overplayed as fuck. And Hickman.. God, I... Well, it'll be vaguely better written than Millar's events and a handful of Bendis', but we're going to be narrated to death, aren't we?

It makes me long for the simplicity of Siege.

AvX made them a buckload of money. So yeah, basically, they gonna keep doing them because that's how they earn money.

Are event comics still making them that much money? I honest to god dropped every Marvel book in disgust after the end of AvX and didn't buy one again until the new Young Avengers. And there was stuff I was buying! That event put me off Marvel so much so that I was actively avoiding books that appealed to me.

I just, ugh. Event fatigue. So much event fatigue.

I haven't bought a single Marvel comic since 2007. The internet was always there to let me download whatever I wanted or give me the gist of how awful it was.

Honestly, every "Event" since "Avengers Disassembled" has had all the value for money and plot consistency of the tie-in merchandise to the Star Wars prequels.

No, wait - me and my family actually got some pretty good mileage out of the "Episode I" Monopoly set. "Civil War" and "AvX" is more on the "Jar Jar Binks McDonalds toy" scale.

EDIT: Never mind, just spotted the three remaining Marvel characters not on an Avengers team right now.

Given Thanos is primarily a space character, it makes sense to involve the Inhumans and Imperial Guard, though. Still likely to be an Avengers crossover if not a standalone event book, especially since Hickman writes the two main books (we'll just pretend Uncanny Avengers actually matters) and he's already bringing in characters who could stand to take on Thanos, plus it could be the natural evolution of the storyline in New Avengers.

A part of me is like "Alright, I can dig it. They're revisiting all this space stuff and that could be really cool, because if I was old enough to have read it the first time, I missed it (a fact of which I am not a fan) and whenever I see things from back then I think it looks really cool and I want it."

But THEN I realize that they're doing it as a result of selling out, and my soul is like "sadface".

Gotta set Thanos up for GOTG or Avengers 2, yo. Even though I bet money that next to no-one who was unfamiliar with the Avengers comics before the movie came out is going to be reading the comics now.

I mean, at this point I could probably craft a more entertaining comic by finally getting into a committed relationship, siring a child, raising them in a loving environment, gifting them whichever of my old action figures they want and buying them some of their own, then making a photocomic based on the battles/interactions they create thereof.

Probably I'd have more fun doing that than even just considering how dull and formulaic the above "Event" is going to be.

Don't they say that about event single event they do?

Remember, how they said when they did Heroic Age (yet another "NEW ERA", that lasted for like a year and half ), they would have break from events (and had them anyway)? That lasted long, hasn't it?

Can we even call it an event, when it happens every fucking year? Marvel, i it gives you money, whatever but please don't insult our intelligence and stop pretending this is in anyway unique or special.

Well, it's Hickman, so it ought to be at least interesting to read.

If it isn't, at least they've been pretty good about making the events skippable.

First reaction: Okay, this is clearly to push Thanos for the movies coming up. That's fine, it's not a bad plan, it's not even 'selling out' *as long as they have a good story*.

Second: I have hope that Hickman can pull off something awesome using the Infinity Gems/Cosmic backdrop.

Third: I hope this isn't as much an Avengers crossover as it is a grand old style Marvel event, like they used to do, which will involve the whole line, more or less. It does have the Uncanny Avengers team, but... Falcon made the cover? Really? Falcon?

Fourth: For the love of all that is holy, Marvel. If you're going to have a big, cosmic event, please involve Quasar. Dear GOD PLEASE. He's my favorite character, and he hasn't got much love since the cosmic line collapsed.

Final: ...maybe we'll finally find out what happened to Nova (Rich), Starlord, and Thanos when the Cancerverse 'collapsed' on them (but apparently didn't, since it showed up in Assembled).

The Falcon is in Captain America 2 (subtitle: The Winter Soldier) and he's going to be in the new Avengers Assemble cartoon. I'm actually more surprised that various Inhumans made the cover.

It's kind of funny, I don't think the Avengers track record against Thanos is very good at all, unless they have Mar-Vell or Warlock heading the charge.

I mean, I remember a scene from the Infinity War where Hulk, Thing, Wonderman, and god knows who else jumped on Thanos and he was basically fine.

Probably not gonna read this, Hickman hasn't really impressed me lately with all his annoying pretentious narration and infographics.
This isn't really unexpected though and, it looks like it's gonna tie into what's going on over in Hickman's New Avengers book, plus it's got that Ex Nihilo guy from the first arc of Avengers (who I hate, but still) so it could be worse. Marvel's tended to put these events in their own separate titles lately, so as long as they keep the tie ins to a minimum and don't interrupt the books I'm reading for more than an issue, I'll be happy to just ignore this.

Nope, that's being written by Jason Aaron and has already been solicited. This is being written by Hickman and features a different artist than Thanos' series. It also couldn't be an origin series if it took place during the contemporary Marvel time period where we currently have the Uncanny Avengers lineup and Hickman's new contributions to the Avengers present.

It's more like these are the norm, and everything else is just what's in the cracks between each one.
