Jay Garrick saves his mom from the world's army that has finally found where he lives and are trying to capture him for their purposes.

I do hope we at some point learn exactly why the world army is out to get these new Wonders heroes aggressively.

LOL! My first reaction as well! Who wouldn't trust a group called the World Army, though?

Well, when they try to arrest you just for having superpowers...

Really exited that Fate is showing up. Also thought it was a nice call back to Sandman's original appearance and look when he's wearing the hat and coat for his disguise.

Y'know what'll make this superhuman cooperate with our ostensibly good organization? Threatening his mother!
I hate that kind of crap.
And I still hate this version of Wesley Dodds, in general I like what's been done with the Earth 2 reboot, which actually feels like a proper reboot instead of a terrible series of confusing half measures, but I greatly prefer pulp detective with a connection to the Dreaming, Sandman to this generic government operative.

Actually this, like much of the DCnU, seems like another take on their "Tangent" universe more than anything.

Well it's got that Tangent quality, there's no denying it, but what I mean is that though it might not be exactly, or even remotely, like the original stuff these characters appeared in, it's still a clean break that's made it clear that it's gonna do some stuff differently, unlike the main DCU. Plus the fact that most of its story, except for World's Finest, has been the vision of a single writer in a single book, has kept it much more consistent than Earth 1.

Wesley Dodds didn't always have anything to do with The dreaming, though. There was a period where he wore a spandex costume, in fact. This version seems to be a mash-up visually of Wesley and the later Sand. I just don't know how we're supposed to ever empathize with a character who pulls this kind of stuff. Makes me wish they'd given Robinson a writing partner to tamp down his 'Cry For Justice' tendencies, because, as you point out, the actual hard reboot is a welcome change from the main DCU.

Oh I know, I just think the Vertigo version was far more interesting than the original adventurer, and I would have preferred to see more of that take on the character here.

You know what really makes for a good cliffhanger? A balloon full of text that makes me go huh and read it again and again without understanding what the heck it means.

Oh you mean that doesn't make a good cliffhanger?

Who would have know?

the self-introduction-exposition!

Aye, that was terrible exposition! Also, why does Jay Garrick's mother seem to be the same age as her son??

In more positive reviewing, the colouring on Wotan's cape sure looks lush!

I think it makes more sense in the book. Because it took me a minute realize that Wotan is talking to Fate, not Jay there.

In fact if Fate knows this all ahead of time, it can almost be read as Wotan being a snarky jerk. Fate says it's the realm of nabu, which Wotan knows and is obvious. So he follows up with more things that everyone who matters already knows.

It took me several rereads of the first page to realize that the redheaded gal is supposed to be Jay's mom. How old was she when she gave birth? -1?

THAT'S meant to be Wotan? What a truly awful design. Even if he just named himself after Wotan, it's still atrocious.

Somehow I just can't get over Atom Smasher calling Jay Garrick "kid." I'm so used to it being the other way around.

Depending on how the Speed Force works this week, he might be able to go too fast without injuring his companions.

I realize it was done for the visual, but Atom Smasher being able to go 'huh?' and then run Jay down seems a little off to me. It implies Jay isn't really moving at superspeed at all.

I like how (to me, at least) Wotan looks neither overly masculine nor overly feminine. Pre-DCnU, Wotan was a cavewoman who (after being raped... of course...) became a powerful sorceress, and among other feats could switch from body to body, and later to direct her own reincarnation into a male body. I'd like to see a take on the character who has switched bodies so often over the millennia that they've become essentially genderless (or pangender?), and any body they inhabit takes on an asexual or androgynous quality.

Wotan's looking... green. Is it just his glowy hand stuff or is his skin actually green?
That look certainly works for being an evil magician guy.
